advice needed for making workbench dogs

Hi

Newbie here asking real basic stuff - haven't done a lot since way back at school. I bought an old beech bench top recently, looks like it might have been a school one with vices both sides. I've made a base for it and want to fit it out with a few useful aids now. It has square dog holes but no dogs. If I make my own how do I get them to stay in place. Are they just square section made to a tightish fit or is there something like a spring clip involved? thanks

The bottom will need to incorporate a slight angle for a spring mechanism. Looks like this

An alternative I favour is using a ball catch in the side - not got a pic to hand, but can do so if that's a bit sparse on description...
