Hi there,
I'm learning to use a Tormek T-7 at the moment and have had good success with plane irons and chisels but I'm struggling with my planer blades. I've got a JPT-260 with a couple of sets of spare blades but they seem to be pretty tough. I have spent the whole weekend trying to get one set sharp. I must be doing something wrong as the video's I've seen show a blade being sharpened in minutes. I'm finding that the wheel glosses over before I've managed to sharpen the set meaning that you need to adjust the height/position of the jig after truing the wheel.
Anyone got any advice or points to conentrate on? Should I concentrate on a blade at a time and true the stone in between blades? It seems to take off a lot of material straight after truing but then gums up pretty quickly and the coarse side of the grader doesn't help much.
How much pressure should be applied to the jig? I didn't want to apply too much as this forces the holder to rise up the jig slightly and change the honing angle. The support doesn't look that well made in that respect as it's quite easy to alter the angle. I was using a marker to see where on the blade is being ground under different pressures and it changes across the whole width of the edge.
Thanks.
