I have the opportunity to buy this post-war band saw locally. It is a 28" model manufactured by a company called Konetuote in Helsinki. I have rebuilt old machinery before so that would no be too much of a problem but I wonder whether this strange design would work. The saw hasn't been used in over 40 years so nobody does remember if it worked.
The tilt of the upper wheel cannot be adjusted. Instead there is a flange along the back edge of the wheel rims. There are rubber tyres on the rims and they are crowned quite a bit. I suppose the blade is intended to run with it's back against the flange.
The blade tensioning is by rack and pinon. The inner handwheel tensions and the outer locks it in place.
Would this work in part time professional use?
The upper wheel with it's arm. The arm is a separate casting bolted to the main frame with 4 bolts.
The tensioning system
The lower frame and table
Further there are a heap of original plywood guards not pictured. Plywood guards were common on Finnish post-war machinery because steel plate was in short supply.
