Hi

Can anyone advise please. I have bought reclaimed Douglas fir floorboards for a hallway. I can't decide on whether to wax, oil or varnish them. I want to avoid the yellowing I associate with varnish, but don't know if the others are hard wearing enough, but don't really want to have to refurbish them every year or so. The hall doesn't get a huge amount of wear. My children are grown.

Thanks

I would look into hardwax oils - Osmo and Fiddes are good (and others). They are so easy to use and virtually odour free (compared to Rustins PC and varnishes). Yes, you'll have to retreat once in a while, but it's so easy it's not a big deal. Or else a water based polyurethane. I did a hallway 20 years ago with Rustins Plastic - it's still perfect (it was a dark wood so I can't comment in this instance about yellowing) - but it's a bit of a pig to use.
