I know Stanley made one, but there's no 5 1/4 in the 1938 Marples catalogue, so maybe you have the only one!
Presumably it has a Marples cap iron - is it the same size as in your 5 1/2? Is the casting marked Marples?

andy it has a marples cap iron and blade and stamped the same as all my other marples it is narrower than my 5.1/2 and wider than my no 5 also has the lovely marples handle and tote i will try to upload a picture of it alone and side by side my others

That's odd  A Stanley No.5¼ is narrower than a No.5. The Stanley is the same width as a No.3, with a 1¾" iron.

Are you sure you're not looking at an early No.5½, which would have a 2¼" iron vrs the later ones with a 2 3/8" iron?

Cheers, Vann.

There seems to be some confusion. Can you measure (as accurately as you can manage)

* the width of the blade
* the width of the casting
* the length of the casting

toby can you post a picture of your marples planes please so i can compare them with mine with yours

the sizes of plane are
casting width is 2.5/8"
blade width is 2.1/4"
length of casting is 15"

my 5.1/2 marples plane sizes are
casting is 2.7/8"
blade width is 2,3/8"
length is 15"
two completley different sizes so help please if you can also all of my marples are in perfect condition i rate them as good as any out there the castings are a little bigger than record and stanley and also the blade and the cap iron are also thicker than all others now that says alot about tools that have not been made for along time

Mine is a stanley 5.5 the iron is 2 1/4" no a marples sorry, I can still give you the required measurements if they will help.
If your plane was a 5 1/4 I'm sure it would have such marking.

The smaller iron than the now standard width is just one of many earlie features.

Thanks

I have no doubt that plane is an early Marples No.5½. The 1938 Marples catalogue shows the No.5½ as having a 2¼" iron.

Stanley aimed the No.5¼ junior jack at schools etc. In 1939 Record brought out their Technical jack , the T5, with a 2¼" iron and 13" long body. After the war Record re-introduced the T5 with a 2" iron and 13" body. Your plane, at 15" long, does not appear to be an attempt by Marples to produce a "junior jack", but fits the specification for a standard pre-war No.5½ Marples (or is that No.M5½).

I have two Record No.05¼ planes with 2¼" irons. Both are 15" long, and 2¾" wide.

Cheers, Vann.
