Got some wood for the comp and made this

Pete, I think someone once said that the best tool to use for any job is the one in your hand.

    Problems sharpening gouge - demotivated

Glad to see you've got it going Ok. Its just infuriating when it wont go right and you cant understand why. I think the sharpening thing is one of the most difficult bits of turning when you set out.

Hello from a newbie - recommendations on bench grinder pleas

I have the slow creusen and can recommend it. I also have a high speed 8 inch record which did me proud when I thought i couldnt afford any better. I am a bowl turner and have never noticed any difference in 6 or 8 inch wheels except to say I think a 6 inch wheel gives a bevel that rubs less and...

    Problems sharpening gouge - demotivated

I wouldnt worry too much about uneven wings on the gouge unless one starts to get in the way. Mine are never the same and it makes no difference - to my bowls. I see you have ordered new wheels so this bit of advice is probably no good now but your grey wheels are also likely to be far too...

    Chuck Recess

I dont have an opinion either way. I have very very few failures either with a spigot or with a recess. Much less than one per year of either. BUT you do need to have a good understanding of your wood and your chuck and not put too much chuck pressure on any recess one makes. The success of a...

    AWGB seminar - How much?!

Oakbear. Thing is they fill these dos (as far as I am aware) so the price does not limit attendance as far as the AWGB is concerned. Presumably they couldnt accommodate everyone if it was cheaper.

New to turning (or at least wil be soon)

OK. I have had both a DC motor and three phase motor via inverter on different lathes, both on electronic variable speed. Neither ever required maintenance neither lacked torque that I could tell for their size. My opinion is that if Janos is correct this is no reason not to buy or be put off...

New to turning (or at least wil be soon)

Dont be without variable speed! It can be done without variable speed and of course it has been done for millennia. But there are no disadvantages to variable speed and the advantages are legion. I would say that, in modern turning, it is essential in a professional studio. (That should get a...

    A lesson learned

Ouch. That must throb! On horror stories... many years ago on a farm a worker I knew was using an angle grinder on the floor to cut some angle iron. You know, the old down on one knee stance. Apparently the grinder caught and pulled free of his grasp and shot off across the floor. Coming to the...

Chatter, tear out and have I really got a bowl gouge?

Those chatter marks are the result of the thin wood at the rim vibrating. The tool, or rather the pressure you exert on it makes the wood distort and spring back, a situation that gets worse and worse as the tool bevel passes over the previous poor cuts. Sharpen the tool. Use your fingers...

    Advice on Lathe Choice

Be aware though that there are lots of concerns in forum world about the quality of record products and their after sales service and after sales advice.

First bowl and a string of questions

Thats a good effort for first time. i would advise you to try to cut bowls with the gouge and use the scraper as little as possible. But as you see for yourself anything that ends up with a bowl is an acceptable method. How you get there doesnt matter so long as you are satisfied with the...

    Looking for large diameter lathe

I have a VB and can stop that too. It has a 2 horse motor and they nowadays have a 3 horse as standard ( I'm not jealous). Just depends on how hard you want to work it. There are a number of lathes like the VB, graduates (a bit small) general(?) wadkins that are Dalek like and give good all...

Cause of banding on insides of bowls?

Pete how do you shape your bevels with a long grind? I ask because I have never had a catch in the bottom of a bowl with a long ground gouge. Indeed the idea of the long grind is to avoid catches; the wings are ground out of the way for this reason. I know some turners grind the long grind...

Cause of banding on insides of bowls?

I use the 'E' profile for everything, perhaps a bit steeper bevel and ground with a slight hamster cheek rather than very steep sides to give a variable bevel angle around the gouge to make life easier inside deep bowls when you need a back-cut to help you out.

Cause of banding on insides of bowls?

Two things may be going on.I'm not sure which from your description. Firstly as has been said you may be having trouble with your bevel lifting off. This will give series humps and bumps in the bottom of the bowl as you try to get a flat without bevel support. The humps and bumps will be...

    Second (less poor) attempt

Talk about choosing a difficult bit of wood for your second bowl!! The bowl contains the pith and this will always give you problems because it invariably is or will split from there. If you have soft spalting and problems with getting good cuts wet the wood with whatever finish you're going...

    Bowl of Dark Surprises

Cool! like the bowl, texture, colour. Dont understand the ball thing yet. For my aesthetic the bottom is far too wide. Sell more stuff (!) and save up for some small jaws or use a waste block and/or reverse turn to finish.
