    Heart Locket - Pretty Clever

I had a go at making this. A sawn down pop rivet for one hinge, and cut down nails for the other. Magnets to hold it together. It worked, for a given definition of work. I just wasn't accurate enough.

    Dowel drilling.

If the hole is deeper than the dowel, won't that provide an escape for the excess glue?

Oil finish on maple, yew and lime

I did oil the lime in the end. It didn't really do much to it, but I did notice it going a bit patchy. A bit more oil on the lighter parts, and it came up even. As I said though, it didn't really bring out the wood at all - maybe there is nothing there to bring out in the first place? I'll...

    Cat Deterrent

Cat's aren't all bad. We just had some neighbours move in with a cat, and the mole population has plummeted!

    Lime and oak shelf

Thanks for the comments. Has anyone used lime before? When it was still in its sawn state it was covered in a white powder that brushed off, and had black blotches that sanded out. Fungus? Sap? Something else?

    WIP - trug

Thanks for all the comments. Having 'proper' woodworkers approve does wonders for my confidence. It's finished with a few coats of danish oil. I'd like to experiment with different finishes on things, but I have a very limited budget. (That's one reason for this style - minimal costs!) I'll...

    waney edge oak board

Just reread your post, and it isn't what I was thinking of. I posted mine anyway: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/lime-and-oak-shelf-t41654.html I like this style, and my partner does - but some independent thoughts would be welcome. disco_monkey79, I'd love to see what you come up with.

    Lime and oak shelf

I wasn't at all sure about this wood. I was going to use it to make the top of a small coffee table, but it just looked horrible before it was worked. We needed a shelf, so after some sanding and oiling... The end is more unfinished than I remembered. And the brackets. Cutting these...

    waney edge oak board

I made one of these myself over the weekend out of lime and oak. I'll take some pics. Not that that will help you source the timber you need, but I got mine from a small (one man) local woodyard.

Oil finish on maple, yew and lime

I've read that oil based finishes on ash can turn it a nasty shade of yellow. Are there any such gotchas with maple, yew or lime?

    Breathing dust

After reading all that, I think I'll get hold of a better mask before tackling the slate - or practically anything else! A powered respirator is simply out of my budget for a while, but I'll get that Trend airace - or something similar - as soon as I can. The airace has an attachable shield...

    Breathing dust

A timely warning indeed. I need to take a belt sander to some slate slabs soon. The only mask I have is a supply of these: Apart from not fitting that well, they fog up safety glasses enough that I can use one or the other, but not both. What's a good alternative?

    Data protection?

We've been chasing British Gas for a £500 refund for the last six months. It's in my partner's name, but I'm a bit better on the phone, so deal with it. They generally get so far before realising I'm not the account holder, so ask if I can put her on to give permission for me to talk on her...

Do I have to work contracted notice period ?

I read that as leaving in 4 weeks, rather than the 3 months his company would like.

Not in our house! Umm... Good point. If that happens it becomes an experimental piece to try out new techniques and the finished result merely a byproduct of the organic process. I work next door to an artist - does it show? The end pieces may well split and cup/bow. While the handle might...
