High build lacquers for kitchen worktops

Hi Chrispy An oil finish will not be acceptable to them. The doors and drawer fronts all have the same finish. If I can find the right finish I will end up using it at my own home. fed up with the constant process of sanding back to the wood, re-oiling.

High build lacquers for kitchen worktops

hi all My client currently has kitchen work tops that have been factory finished with a durable clear coating. Whilst they seem durable there are a few spots where the wood underneath has discoloured. There doesn't appear to be any sign of damage to the finish so I assume that perhaps it is...

    sanding 2k- feels like grit

hi mailee Thanks for the reply. By dusting gun I meant the type connected to a compressor http://www.axminster.co.uk/air-dusting-guns-dept206847/ My work practice is not unlike yours but I do tend to sand the penultimate coat, in part to eliminate any contaminants that landed on the surface...

    sanding 2k- feels like grit

I am spraying mdf. The first coat was Morrells 2 pack white primer. Sanded back with Festool (Titan) 360g. The next coat was a 30% sheen coloured finish. Unfortunately when I sand the first top coat (400g), dust off, tack cloth off and spray with the dusting gun, the finish still feels gritty...

    acid cat contamination

Hi all I having been using the Black 20% sheen AC from Morrells and noticed that it is contaminated. The finish looks like someone has added a very fine sand. At first I assumed that I was the source of the contamination but after cleaning out the gun etc it is still there. To be fair to...

Spray finishing MDF edges - How I do it

Thanks Richard Not sure that I have enough space for a decent compressor so i guess that I will have to stick with my Fuji HVLP. I generally stick with acid cat as the gun is happy with it. Although you say that the grain raising isn't too bad should I take that too mean that it is...

Random orbital sander for site use

Hi Wizer Sorry if I gave the impression that the Triton is rubbish- I have never seen or used it. At that price though I would expect it to be rubbish. We have all used both good quality tools and rubbish tools- I can not see why anyone would want to use rubbish tools when they have an alternative. I...

Spray finishing MDF edges - How I do it

Hi Richard- Re the waterbourne- are you using a compressor or turbine??? Do you get grain swell with the water based primers? I too have only ever used the acid cat Cheers

    hand painted v spray

I paint most of my doors by hand maintaining constant tramlines on the styles and rails. The "expensive" kitchen doors are first sprayed with acid cat and then (often badly) hand painted on site. Thus no need for sanding on site and reduced drying times allowing the kitchen to be used earlier.

Mixing MR MDF and Standard MDF paint difference?

I agree with JohnnyD. Just use Dulux Trade acrylic. I sand first with 180 silicon carbide (Nuetral Abrasives being one of the better brands- now available from Selco- amongst others). I prefer painting the MR as there is less grain swell and the egdes are much crisper- ie less chipping on the...

Finishing insides of MR MDF carcasses

I second the acid cat but the only problem is that you lose the paint fill capabilties where the boards meet. Is there not a risk of water ingress- people do wash units out???

Random orbital sander for site use

Why would you want to use a rubbish sander on site??? I second the Festool Rotex sanders, I have the newer smaller unit and the older larger diameter. Both are fine for site use. Perhaps the sites I work on are more tool friendly than yours (I only work in domestic homes and thus the dust...

    New Festool TS55 on eBay

I have the older saw model and the older guides- you cannot guarantee a straight line with two of the old rails connected- not sure about the new ones though. If you do buy a rail suitable for cutting 2440 be advised the you need extra length on both the run in and run out. The old rail could...

    Camvac or which other?

I don't have much experience of fixed workshop dust extractors but if you are looking for a portable dust extractor then far and away the best on the market are the Festool ones. My first ever dust extractor was a Numatic George-type. It was fine for woodworking but awful for sanding cellulose...

Dulux Eggshell problem (now solved) then MDF painting tips

Hi all Just a couple of points re spraying with eggshell. 1. As you are aware the air coming out of the gun gets quite hot- to reduce this problem you can buy another hose and effectively double the length. The other advantage of this is that you can now put the turbine in another room. My...
