Need Info on the Robert Sorby ProEdge???

Update: Two things I don't like about it. 1. The on-off switch is a normal rocker switch encased in a clear rubber cover. Makes switching on and off less than precise and easy. 2. The V shaped tool holder that engages in the plate is fine.... but not for short tools, which won't reach the...

Need Info on the Robert Sorby ProEdge???

Mine arrived today.... Piece of cake to set up.... easy to use... good results. I even turned a pen blank all the way down with a roughing gouge! Rod

Superglue - variable quality & what do you use it for?

In addition to the above.... I often use it for filling little holes in grain. A tiny drop applied, and then fine sand the wood while the glue is wet. The dust mixes with the glue and produces a result that is exactly the same as the surrounding wood. I also use it regularly for stabilising...

I've bought something from the dark side

Ah! That takes me back a few years. :D That standard toolpost that comes with the Super 7 was a bit primitive. Get yourself a nice 4 way toolpost... or with the kit that you have you could make yourself one! The Super 7 (and the ML7) is a great workhorse! Rod

    Counting the days .....

I bought myself a Patriot chuck last week. It is a beautifully engineered piece of work. Superb. Hint: be a little careful when you spin it onto the thread of the lathe. There are some sharp corners on the chuck that bite your fingers when it stops suddenly and reaches the end of the thread. Rod

A Guide to Building your own Bench for Noobies?

Long timber in the vice at the left, supported the other end on a dog on the right hand leg. Great for gathering shavings and sawdust. Even better if there is a dog hole or two above the drawer. Rod

Need Info on the Robert Sorby ProEdge???

You guys are killing me. I am sooooo tempted to get one of those. Yes, its an expensive piece of kit, but it does sound worth it. No negative comments at all? Rod

    Look what I've been given

After all this time I'm not surprised that they don't work! They'll be fine with a new set of batteries. Beautiful tools are lovely to behold. :D Rod

Has there been a gory accident thread yet?

It doesn't seem to hinder your thumb picking when playing the blues on your guitar, Pete. Rod ps. Folks.... Pete plays a mean blues on the guitar.... and on the ukulele too!

Tool rest height - Sorby modular system

The CCL I have just has one part. (I just took it off.... and boy! Was it rough on all the cast faces! So I took the opportunity to clean it up.) Rod

Tool rest height - Sorby modular system

I bought all three sizes. Yes, thoretically the small one should move right in. The problem I have is that the banjo on the CCL won't move close enough to the work when turning small diameters, because the centre of the rest (the pivot point) is directly above the mounting pillar, whereas with a...

    Olive wood twist pen

Lovely! Coincidentally, I have a load of that wood on its way to me right now. If it looks as good as that, then I will be well pleased. :D Rod

Tool rest height - Sorby modular system

I have just bought a set of tool rests... the Sorby modular tool rest system, which I am using with my CCL lathe. PROBLEM 1 With the tool rest pillar fully bottomed out, the top of the tool rests are 10mm above the lathe centre line. (I am able to set the "crude" CCL tool rest just above...

The first thing off my lathe

I am ineed going to hang on to my "prototypes" :D These three were made this afternoon.... First a twist pen in a lovely butter coloured yew, with copper plated fittings. And then a pencil and pen set in spalted maple with gunmetal fittings This is fun! Rod

    UK - USA Price Comparision.

I have done this sort of thing a few times with high value stuff. You pay the state sales tax (that varies per state... a lot) Then at the airport of exit, you find the tax desk, present your receipts and claim back the tax. It doesn't matter if the airport of exit is in an different state...

The first thing off my lathe

Today's pen is of zebrawood. The wood blank was cut accross the grain to emphasise the beauty of the wood. This is another wood that needed flooding with thin CA glue prior to the final cuts on the lathe. I learned that the hard way after a first aborted attempt when the wood just broke away...

The first thing off my lathe

Thanks for the kind words, Kevin. My wife has now suggested that I make a bunch of them for Christmas presents this year..... and then proceeded to snaffle the burr oak pen. So I made another for myself this evening. I'm at the stage where (only having made 6 now) I don't want to part with...

The first thing off my lathe

Sorry for not replying sooner.... I have been away in darkest Africa for a couple of weeks... Easy... I just haven't learned to turn anything larger yet. The lathe that I am using is a CCL from Axminster. Sure, it seems huge for this job of making pens, but it isn't really. These are...
