    Melamine lacquer problems

I've spent a good part of the day applying more coats of melamine to the inside of the bowl but each time the same regions just repel the lacquer (leaving uncoated bits). The wood should have been as clean as a whistle (no wax or grease) so maybe the wood itself is repelling the finish. Think I...

    Melamine lacquer problems

Thanks Pete. I've been poking around the internet and found a method using Rustins 'Plastic Coating' which seems to be a resin plus hardener (cold cure). See here. Has been used on vessels to hold liquid but not sure if it's food safe.

    Melamine lacquer problems

I'm making a wassail bowl that needs to hold 2 pints of cider. I've turned it out of end grain beech and of course it needs a food safe finish. Initially, I coated it in undiluted sanding sealer and several coats of undiluted melamine lacquer applied with a brush. To test it I filled it with...

    two spalted beech forms

Loving that new background - your photographic skills have improved dramatically. Nice turnings too!

    dust extraction

Apologies for being boring but the human eye, without any optical aids, can resolve particles down to around 0.1mm or 100 micrometres (microns). I used to be a professional electron microscopist... :P

    Dust protection?

Thanks for that DeepBlue. Coincidently, about an hour before I read your post I ordered the Vitrex from Amazon (much cheaper than Axminster). Seems the best way to go at the moment as I don't spend much time in the shop so can't really justify the cost of the pro head gear. Your comments have...

So, what's wrong with my pendants?

I would keep them simple - maybe with a smaller hole which is positioned off-centre. Some examples here at the bottom.

    Dust protection?

I'm starting to get concerned about the level of dust that fills the air in my workshop when I'm sanding. So far I've used disposable dust masks and I'm not sure that these are doing a good enough job. The amount of turning I do is very small, as my employer keeps me very busy, but I am still...

    Shell Auger

I've just bought the deluxe version from Axminster for £29. It's made by Crown Tools and comes with the regular Crown handle already fitted. Also has a spiral flute for easier shavings removal. Seemed like a better buy to me...

    Did you know ?

My CD arrived today. It was version 1.2 (old) but you can go to the website and update it to version 1.5 (new) for FREE. Excellent value for a fiver! :D

Well, for that price I think it's worth a try. Thanks Blister.

Coffee grounds and resin as crack filler?

Thanks for the help guys. I'm off to fill some jars with a selection of wood dusts. :D

Coffee grounds and resin as crack filler?

I've got a few cracks to fill and was wondering about using coffee grounds and resin to recreate bark inclusions. Would be grateful for any tips e.g. should the coffee be soaked in boiling water first? What ratio of coffee to resin should I use? The resin I have is the stuff from Halfords that...

    Chainsaw platform.

My experience is the same as David's. Just keep the spiked bumber in contact with the wood and all should be fine. At the start, I did try using a strap to hold wood on the flat side but it didn't really make much difference (still needed to keep the bumper tight against the wood) and was a pain...

    Chainsaw platform.

Nice job! I made one of these a few months ago. It's absolutely brilliant, especially because it can be turned upside down for flat faced wood or upright (as picture) for logs. One point though is not to spend too much time making it look pretty as mine now has loads of gashes out of it where...

    A Couple Scorched Offerings

I really like the first piece - lovely form and the scorching really adds to the piece. The second one maybe has too much scorching on the outside of the bowl which looks a little overpowering to me. I must have a go at some scorching. Do you apply the blowlamp to the spinning wood on the lathe?

    Best finish for drinking vessel?

Hi guys, I've would like to turn a goblet that will be used as a drinking vessel. I already have some beech and sycamore for the job but I was wondering about water resistant/food safe finishes. I was thinking about some sort of lacquer but I'm not sure about the need for sanding sealer and the...

    Logs V Blanks

I find the wood stores best as part-turned blanks. My split logs check too easily and circular blanks (octagonal ones in my case - no bandsaw, only a chaisaw) take too long to dry and still check. Logs that I keep moist to help prevent splitting start to spalt but this is not always desirable...
