    Designing a garden studio

Thanks for all the feedback, certainly some more food for thought. As I was writing the post I was coming to the (rather obvious) conclusion that it's not really going to work within the 2.5m height. Mike as you say, I first need to try finish the drawing to see if it's drawable, then indeed...

    Designing a garden studio

Okay, hopefully this image works - cheers Mike for pointing it out. Also including a photo to show the setting if any relevance to planning. Large trees pretty close, but I guess if outside building regs, reinforcing mesh would be advisable in the slab. I would really rather not have to go...

    Designing a garden studio

So I'm in the early stages of designing a 'Garden Studio' to relieve some pressure on the house in this new work-from-home era. Not done this sort of thing before, so lots to learn. Broadly speaking I intend to take the 'Building a shed Mike's way' design approach - thanks Mike :) So here is...

    Building material supplier

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. Joel, especially for the local contacts, I will be sure to get in touch with them when I'm ready. I also spoke to A10 Timber this morning and they are happy to setup a cash account so I can get a trade-like discount on this project.. So I'll get...

    Scheppach TS2000 problem

Pete, if there were a prize, would I get it now? :) So 15 years later I'm still a happy owner of my TS2000, and similar to you Pete, I regularly have a go at inverting it and cleaning it all out. I removed the bottom metal sheet permanently to allow the dust to fall away freely which may help...

Thanks for all the advice so far, most appreciated. I'll be taking the 'Building a shed Mike's way' design approach - thanks Mike :) So here is my first rough design. (Hope the image works) https://imgshare.io/images/2020/06/14/Garden-Studio-Rough-V1.png Going for an L shaped building...

    Building material supplier

Good spot Mike - as you suspected, I just want to build it properly, warm, dry with electricity, heating , insulated and double glazed. Most likely to be no more than 15sqm internal floor area, but < 1m from two boundary fences. So under permitted development and avoiding building regs if...

    Building material supplier

Robin, Mike and Richard, thanks for the quick and useful replies already. Great idea about opening an account. I had assumed you had to be trade, but I guess you can just ask... Some good tips about lengths too. Agree on quality, so may go for a local timber merchant to view stocks. MikeG -...

    good benchtop planer

The thing is I can't afford a bigger workshop, but could afford a good quality cast iron bench-top planer like the grizzly, but from what I can see in this country such tools are not available.... Unless somebody knows something I don't?

    good benchtop planer

Hi all Can anybody recommend a decent bench-top planer? I'm limited to a bench-top model more due to space restrictions than cost. I've read the many posts on this topic, and the SIP seems popular. I'd prefer to have a cast iron model and I'm not sure the SIP still is CI...

    Automatic Dust extractor power switch

Hi I was in maplin the other day and they are selling the following product for about £15. http://www.oneclickpower.com/acatalog/#aDSK105 It is designed for switching peripherals off automatically when the computer is switched off, but could possibly work for switching on a dust...

Thanks all for your useful comments. Waterhead thanks for the help with the image - I'll remember that for next time and keep them small! Help needed with setting up used dust extractor - no manual

Hi I've just picked up a used dust extractor - Record RDX800i 1998 model. It seems to work fine, but I don't have the instruction manual. It came with a number of spare paper filter bags, but I'm not sure if any or all belong to the extractor. Take a look at the picture. Do I need to place...

    Finishing pine floorboards

Hi Gavin Thanks very much for the reply. Sounds like a floor laquer is the way to go. You're right annual maintenance is not something many people actually get round to!

    Clear Floor Vanish

I used the Ronseal Diamond Hard product 2.5 years ago and am finding the floor looks a mess now with patches where it has worn through. Any ideas what I may have done wrong? The effect is exaggerated because I used one containing a stain so you see the light wood where it's worn through.
