Moving to the US of A

Neill, Where are you moving to in the US? A good travel adapter will help for domestic 110V for US, Canada and Mexico but don't know of such for 220v. Our 220v female outlets are most likely of a different configuration than those in the UK in any event.

    Workbench question

Hi Ryan About ten years ago I had the same problem/questions as you are faceing. I was advised to just build one. Which i did, in stages over about a year. I used mostly hand tools to do it. The first thing I did was make a 72" x 22" top of construction grade 2x4's from a big box retailer...

    Planer waste

Hi folks; Most of my chippings go into the compost pile. Plane shavings are great used for starting the BBQ. The shavings of some of the fruit trees if soaked in water and added on top of the coals will give a nice smoked flavor to stuff on the grill. There are a few trees here (upper...

    Adding drainage to garage floor

I would do what Kieth suggested and cut a hole in the floor under or near where you park the car. Then with a post hole digger dig down four or six feet and fill that with gravel. Get a floor drain from a pluming supply set that on top of the gravel a half inch or so below the surface of your...

    Turned tennon too small

Hi, Awhile back I picked up a cheap used Wilton mini lathe made in China. Any way I thought I'd try it out today. I had a small piece of cherry just about big enough for a file handle so thought that that would be a good first project. Having found some instructions on a web site I cut a...

Let the world in or Shut the Sun out?

All roads have a surface, It's just a matter of with what. :D Half of my shop is in the garage. I have my big power tools out there. When I had it built I had a double roll up door put on the front facing the street and a single roll up door put on the back side facing into the back yard...

    Flooring for a counter top?

Hi! I just got a hold of a bunch of 100 year old hardwood flooring salvaged from a tear down. All of it is in good shape on the top side but some of it is roughed up on the edges and and some have split tongues so will need to be cleaned up. Most of it is oak with some of what appears to be...

    Tablesaw turntable

Hi Everyone, The turn table is a great idea for solving the problem. I have thought of doing this for my tablesaw and jointer. Perhaps using my air compressor for the air supply. Small channels would be routed into 1/2 or 3/4 mdf for the sub base to distribute the air evenly all around...

    Ibbotson tool?

HI everyone, For some of you saw gurus. I have been asked to help in identifying this medallion. It was found in an archaeological context in a cave dig in southern Minnesota USA. Of interest would be information about the maker and tool it came from (saw?). If possible the range of years...

Mounting a router on a Radial arm saw-

I have an old Sears Craftsman RAS. You can remove the blade, tip the motor 90 deg, and mount a chuck on the motor shaft. You can use router and shaper bits. I have never used it that way though. You could most likely route at what ever angle you need.

    Centre Marking Gauge

I made one a few days ago to center mark some poplar for resawing. I used a 3/4" square piece of oak a few inches long and two 8p nails for guide pins. For the marking pin I used the point of an inexpensive compass. The nails were cut so that they would only extend about 1/2 an inch out of...

new workbench - big or small?

Hi Lee J The Grizzly Industries web site has a workshop planner that works pretty slick. http://www.grizzly.com/workshopplanner.aspx You can set the size of your shop and add, resize and move things around to lay out a workshop. It even lets you stack components like benches and over head...

    Hand saws from estate sale

Thanks for the discussion pedder and bugbear. It looks like one vice might not be good for all saws. I have searched the web and think one could be made to use on most of my saws. As long as the handels are off anyway that might be the way to go. Dennis

    Hand saws from estate sale

I stopped at an estate sale last weekend and purchased several old saws. The blades were nice and straight but with some rust. The handles looked sound but cruddy and paint spotted. I took one without an etched logo to try to clean up. It is a 26" 10 ppi, no medallion but nickel nuts. I...

    Plane storage

Thanks for the replys but on re-reading my post I was not clear as to what I was asking. I do not work in the garage in the winter, that is the reason that part of my shop is in the basement where hand my workbench and hand tools are. I would like to keep my planes safe and easily accessible...
