    Garage Sale Drill

While car boot sales are the place to get cheap stuff in the UK, over here in NZ garage sales are the norm, most of them starting at 8am on a Saturday morning. Last Saturday I picked up this drill for the princely sum of $5, about £2.50. There's no makers mark on it but does anyone know what...

    No alcohol for July!

I hope it's ok to post this... I've decided to take a month off alcohol and am doing it in aid of a local (to me in New Zealand) cancer charity. If you would like to sponsor me my page is here: https://nz.dryjuly.com/participant?p=peterdrake. Thanks!

Oops, or why not to rush things...

It was only one short cut I needed, the table saw was set up and the mitre saw not accessible, so I put the mitre gauge on the table saw and made the cut. I'd checked that there were no nails in the wood so was somewhat surprised when sparks appeared And then it dawned on me... ...I'd cut the...

    Cambournepete has a house!

A 90 year old single storey wooden house of approx 177 sq m on a 1012 sq m (quarter-acre) section (plot). The garage/workshop is just over 9mx6m, so longer than my last one and more than twice as wide! :D We moved in today :D so it's all a bit chaotic, but at least it's not quite Christmas...

    Cambournepete has a job

Just thought some of you might like to know that after moving to New Zealand in September I've got a job. :D I'll be working for Tait Communications in Christchurch as a "Senior Partner Support Engineer", looking after the relationship with some of the partners and their products. I'm due to...

    Black & Decker!

Arrived at our 8th motel in 4 weeks tonight. Somewhat tired and grotty, but... ...the microwave is made by Black and Decker! Here's hoping the visit to a prospective employer on Wednesday goes well.

    I'm emigrating to New Zealand

The house gets packed up next week and we leave for Auckland on Monday September 10th, via a stopover in Singapore. For the last few weeks I've been sorting out my garage workshop and cleaning the tools, not to mention cataloging everything for the shipping insurance valuation. And selling the...

Bench grinders II - removing the guard!

What does the panel think about removing the guard from a bench grinder to fit a diamond or CBN wheel? Bear in mind that these wheels are generally made of a solid lump of steel so cannot shatter like a normal grinding wheel.

    Tennis / Tour de France

I'm surprised there's not been a Wimbledon thread yet... Serena 6-0, 6-1. Roger 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. Any other predictions? It's not that I don't want Andy Murray to win, it's just that Roger's my tennis hero and I think he's too good for Murray.

    Rescuing a CD

Anyone got any ideas as to how to rescue a CD that has a split from the middle straight across to edge? I've put tape on the label side and cleaned the surface but that hasn't helped. I can only read 40k of 40+MB :(

Sometimes EBay is a right pain in the proverbial...

<rant> I want to sell the box my iPhone 4 came in as its no use to me. I list it just like many others for eBay to remove the listing whining about "brand protection". They've done it twice. Apparently they don't like you trying to sell packaging without the contents as it might promote fraud...

What do you use your multitool for?

Simple question really, but what do you use your multi-tool for? Apart from cutting through in situ skirting board, doorframe trim and coving (for which it excels) I've hardly used my Fein Multimaster. Am I missing something?

    DIY Hifi magazines "for sale"

Anyone know owt about old penknives?

Anyone here know anything about old penknives? I've got a fairly tatty one with two blades and some rust but I've no idea of it's value (if any). The handle appears to be some kind of bone and the blades have "John Ives Sheffield" on them. I would just stick it on the bay, but their policy...

The Friday "What is it?" Quiz

Anyone any idea what these are or what they are for? They seem to be stained black, but still fairly heavy for their size. The larger one is 1" diameter and just over 18" long, the smaller 3/4" diameter and about 12" long. One end has rings stamped/cut into it, the other a crown with S.O...

    A Vase - comments welcome

Just to prove that I do actually do something, here's a vase I'm hoping to give as a 60th birthday present this weekend. I say hoping, because it's trying to split... #-o It's about 13" high, a 6" diameter. Hollowed using a Rolly Munro, sanded to 600 grit and finished with Chestnut food safe...
