    Boiled Linseed Oil and oak

I only ever use BLO on oak.

    Cherry sapwood

Olly, Thanks. I just used poplar for the sides - 9.5mm thick. Dovetailed at the front and trenched at the back. Cherry slips on the bottom edges of the sides to equalise wear. Shellac'd the sides and interior of each drawer.

    Cherry sapwood

..do I take it you don't like sapwood or is it just some sort of in joke?

    Cherry sapwood

There is sapwood evident in all the above - the lighter coloured streaks. Most evident at the bottom of the chest of drawers and on the left column of the fireplace.

    Cherry sapwood

Well I've used sapwood in cherry quite a lot. Sometimes I feel it adds something to the piece and sometimes not. But on the whole I never design round it - if it's there that's ok. When it comes to choosing more wood to allow for sapwood wastage it unfortunately comes down to visiting the...

    Maple & walnut DVD tower

Lovely piece. I would also like to know where you got the maple from. I can never seem to find the tiger stuff. Great design too - one of your own?

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

Yes I reckon it cost £200 plus the hardware, so about £240 all in. As you say a load cheaper than buying one like that if indeed you could find one as well made!

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

Don't mind at all. Tables are basically an easy constructional piece. After all it's just a frame with legs and a flat top. But getting the top to be flat and square is hard. Different if you have loads of space and its possible to make all the top pieces in one and then cut them, but I don't...

Baby Walker Birthday Pressie - Finished

Really like it. And the use of those bearings shows true engineering bias - it could be used for downhill racing when older. Bet that was a good fun project.

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

That's a possibility. It may be that I don't have to make them at all as my wife likes the present chair style but would like them in dark brown leather. So that would give a good contrast. Early days - better just get on with the sideboards.

    Which sub £200 jigsaw

I've had the Bosch 135 for a couple of years and it's great. Cuts really accurately and square to the face. Something 2 or 3 others I've had didn't.

I know. Have to make 8 of them but can't find a style I like yet. Off into town at the weekend armed with my camera and notebook just like Norm!

Pete, Took me a while to track these down. SCF hardware is where I finally got them. Work really well and are lots better and cheaper than the Hafele ones. http://www.scfhardware.co.uk/product.php/607/19/tf1262_round_table_cleat___die_cast_self_locating

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

Yes, got the cherry from James Lathams in Gateshead. I buy all my wood from them. Oak, cherry, maple, poplar and all veneered boards. Always had great service from them and if it's over a couple hundred pounds they usually deliver. Robert Duncan is right next to them and they stock a good...

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

Alan, I thought someone might ask that, because as you say it does give the impression that it's not solid. Two reasons. Firstly I wasn't sure I liked the look of all the end grain, and then to clinch it, when I was routing a final straight square cut to the ends the cutter tore out a couple...

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

Finished it to 320 grit then 2 coats Danish oil applied and rubbed in with cloth, then 2 more coats applied with grey webrax and rubbed with grain. When dry a final rub down with grey dry webrax and then 2 coats wax. Phew! No wonder I'm knackered!

    Cherry Extending Dining Table

Thanks. Size is 80" long by 36" wide when fully open and 64" long when closed. Size was dictated by available space in room, although the slides I used will allow more extension to be added at a future date. Some more pics......
