My First Hardwood Project - Small Table

this is the finished table: The tabletop is simply attached by 4 dowels, I know this isn't the best way as I've no allowance for any shrinkage/expansion in the wood, but it was my only real choice with the time allowed. I only applied the tiniest amount of glue to the dowels as I was thinking...

My First Hardwood Project - Small Table

I had a go this week at making a small table, this was my first attempt with hardwood using some sawn planks of oaks I bought a few weeks back. I ran the planks through my planer thicknesser and then joined 3 together with dowels to form the table top. It didn't look to good as a plain...

    just got my first scrollsaw

It's a used Ryobi model but after some tinkering replacing the screws in the blade clamps it seems ok. At first it vibrated a lot particuarly at certain speeds but now it's firmly fixed to my bench this seems to have been cured. Is there any maintenance - oiling etc - that the saw would...

oak timber supplier in the herts area

I am after a few oak boards - say 1"x6" x 6ft or so - are there any suppliers in the hertfordshire/bedfordshire area that people recommend - I looked at the online/mail order places but delivery makes up a big proportion of the cost if you are only ordering about £70 worth of timber. Thank you.

    D&M Kempton Park Tool Show

I am hoping to buy a planer/thicknesser shortly - are there likely to be any special bargains at the kempton show if you take it away on the day or are such machines simply ordered for later delivery ? I am wondering if it is worth taking my father's trailer. Thanks for any advice.

my aldi morticer didn't last long

only bought on thursday and first proper go of trying it was today - was using it with a largish chisel about 1/2" but just on softwood when bang ! close inspection revealed the cast iron gear on the rack/pinion had sheared off completely as shown below: hopefully was a one-off flaw -...

    Aldi offers 9th October 2008

I bought the morticer (and the box of chisels in the end !) Seems very sturdily made and have just assembled it - will try it out at the weekend. They didn't have many router tables left so I wouldn't hang about if you are after one of these. The router is different to previous years and...

    Aldi offers 9th October 2008

thanks for the advice Roy. I tend to have all my machines bolted down so will do so if I get this one. Do you have suggestions as to what chisels to get without spending the earth - I would guess the aldi ones would be the equivalent to the £20/£25 sets the likes of screwfix have.

    Aldi offers 9th October 2008

I bought the router and table combination from aldi a couple of years back - still working perfectly - the only thing to note is that this year's router looks a tad different and I can't see if it has a height adjuster than can be easily used with the router in the table which the previous model...

Circle cutters - two blade on a beam type

I purchased one of these from ebay this week (about £9 delivered) - although not yet used it seems well enough made. One thing to note though if you are planning to use with a smallish bench pillar drill is the length of the bar may hit against the pillar on the drill - my cutter needs about 6"...

advice on home made dust extraction systems please

I have recently aquired a large centrifugal blower. I got this with a view to making a workshop air filter but on seeing the size of it think it might be more suitable for a home made dust extraction system. Motor is 1HP, impeller about 12" diameter, inlets 6" - CFM figures unkown...

my first project and a question re finishing

I have just completed my first project - just a small box to be used a sewing box - I know it's simple compared to most on here but we have to start somewhere. it is made from pine from b&q, with a odd piece of plywood for the base. I cut the sidepieces at 45 degrees to allow them to be mitred...
