    Double sided tape

It's about £14.50 + VAT for six rolls at 50 metres each. Not the cheapest but you only need small amounts and six rolls lasts me years, even giving away a couple of rolls along the way. John

    Double sided tape

Hafele: http://www.hafele.co.uk/shop/p/double-s ... 44678/7160 You won't have a problem with things moving, just getting them apart. Use sparingly! I often wonder whether to dispense with proper joints and glue and just stick furniture together with this stuff. John

    Sliding Table Set Up

It only needs to be 3 or 4 thou' above the cast table to avoid friction. The difficulty is in achieving this sort of clearance over the whole width of the cast table in all positions of the slider which is well nigh impossible on most saws. The answer to this question is 'above but as close as...

    Rift sawn oak

Just another small point. Rift sawn oak can be quite useful for square components such as a table leg where two surfaces can be seen at once. Flat or QS produces two adjacent surfaces with wildly different appearances. Diagonal, i.e. rift sawn looks more harmonious. John

    shipping items via courier

Unfortunately, by the time you add in insurance, that £20.00 will be nearer £50.00 or more if the item is a few hundred pounds worth. I wouldn't advise sending anything via courier without insurance - P2G only cover you for £20.00, probably inadequate for something weighing 30kg+. I have had...

    yellow staining in oak

I undertand if it was a cheap price as a favour but, generally I would still send it back because it is faulty. These are not natural defects but have been introduced by whoever dried it. These faults don't become apparent until you have planed it up (though you may be able to spot them if you...

    yellow staining in oak

It's fungal action caused by incorrect drying. This is a useful document I came across a while ago which explains the causes and cures for various faults including the very commonly seen these days 'oak brown stain/white stain'. http://www.coste53.net/downloads/Litera ... drying.pdf Without...

    burr oak veneer laptop box

Hi Coley, What happens with this sort of open veneer is that a lot of holes fill with glue as it's being pressed and it looks awful. I've started using West System epoxy for this type of thing. Expensive but has many advantages. I mix in some coloildal silica thickener to the consistency of...

Advice on planing/preparing endgrain for jointing

What you can't get away from is that the shape of each triangle is constantly changing and this cannot be resisted however it is joined. John

Advice on planing/preparing endgrain for jointing

I completely agree. I have seen one example of this and it did fail catastrophically. In the orientation you describe, it would be even worse since your joints would be mainly end grain. There are only two ways of doing this. Firstly, join conventionally to produce the required width then cut...

try http://www.brookstimber.com/contactus.php in Skelmersdale. I've always found the quality to be very good and not all that far from Runcorn. John

    Bad news, advice sought.

That's all very well but it's still sticking your head in the sand if you don't have all the information. You could even be working at a loss if you just kid yourself that it's all 'profit'. Do you think it's poor advice to suggest working out costs properly? It isn't as if it's difficult or...

    Bad news, advice sought.

Hi Deserter, Always an interesting topic. My 2d. It's pointless stabbing at hourly rates of pay without carefully working out your overheads. £15.00 may be enough or it may not be. Steve and Pond have made some good points and I don't think either of them said that, if £15.00 was wrong, then...

    Veneer Diamond Match

Hi Tring, I have done this quite a few times. My solution was to divide the panel into eight as so: It therefore takes eight consecutive leaves to produce this (or sixteen to make a matching pair). Calculate the dimensions of the triangle and cut them out. The centre ones are book-matched...

Drawer narrower at back than front.

On a traditional drawer, best to taper the opening but only about by 0.5 mm, usually achieved with a shoulder plane. The back and front of the drawer are dimensioned to fit the opening exactly. This way, the drawer is always snug at the front but without the problem of accumulated friction as...

Making your own vacuum press bags

AFAIK 'vinyl' is just a commonly used name for PVC (polyvinyl chloride). It's very common in bag pressing and is reasonably tough and durable. Polyurethane is superior but costs more. John

    Truing/preparing rough lumber?

Cherry isn't a very large tree. You often have to live with using a certain amount of sapwood and facing the pieces accordingly. If you just rip all the sap off, it's going to be a lot of waste. Even with the oak, it's not so simple because trees rarely grow straight and cutting off the waney...
