    Oak Veneer Advise

I need to replace a panel that has oak veneer on both sides, having never worked with veneer before, any advise would be appreciated. Old panel is ply board approx 520mm x 320mm and 150mm thick with veneer on both sides. Sourcing similar thickness ply proved difficult, and I’d prefer...

Wooden Plane - Maker’s Stamp ID

Can anyone decipher this makers mark, the text is a little ornate and obscured with owners mark. ( Image is upside down ) Cannot read the date as the steel plate has obscured it, possible 18??

Anyone confirm the markings on this Spiers smoothing plane. The base is cast with 84, the iron is also marked 84, but what does it signify ?

Vintage Fair Finds - Nottingham Plane Maker & Two Short Molding Planes

I picked up these three planes couple of weeks ago, they were no money at £15.00 for three, and I didn’t want to go home empty handed so here they are. I thought the molding planes unusually short especially the 7”. Anyone know if they were for a particular task? The 8” one has a much heavier...

    Antique Backsaw Identification

This old backsaw has come my way from a contact, with mark that I don’t recognise, to be precise, just three letters T&S L. Seems likely the L is for London ? It’s a substantial saw,16” plate, rip tooth, would I be correct that it’s a car case saw, seems overly large for tenon work?

    Stanley Block Plane ID

Can anyone confirm this plane, is it No 60 1/2. Cutter is 1 3/8” which fits, but I’ve not seen a later ( assuming 1980/90s ?) example, is this type lateral adjuster right?

    Chainsaw Guidance

I have a couple of trees to take down, some guidance regarding chainsaws would be welcome. One was damaged recently, I’ve trimmed it down by hand to a 2 metre high stump, approx 30 inches circumference. Second is a conifer, 4-5 metres high, approx 20 inches circumference. Not really wanting to...

    Old Rabone Boxwood Rules

Does anyone know of any online Rabone catalogues / research resources. My latest find is No 1155, with a compassed main hinge, not one I’ve seen previously. There seems to have been so many types produced, marketing gimmick for some am sure.

    What’s this planes task?

What’s this little planes use 6” in length, the base is stepped on each side. The 1.5” cutter sits perpendicular, so it scrapes rather than cuts, & overhangs the sides ever so slightly so I thought was there ever such a thing as a rebate scraper or even a need, but am probably way off.

    Dust Collection Bags

I’ve a Trend T32, which I find perfect for my needs when hooked up to small hand tools. It uses micro filter bags, not expensive, around £20.00 for 5, however, I remember long ago I had a Vac that had a bag which a plastic strip that was shaped with a fold along its length and was slid over the...

Ever wished you said ‘thanks, that’s kind, but no - freebie lathe chuck

A well intentioned friend of a friend, knowing I have a lathe, asked if I’d I could make use of a chuck, as he had one in his garage and he was going to dispose of it at the local tip. So, off we went, after all, woodturners can always do with another chuck right? The gentleman concerned was a...

    Old GWR Tool

Not sure it’s original purpose, a scraper of sorts, the blade fairly heavy gauge at 2.5 mm, but sharing as it’s a nice example with the copper fastenings, I’ve a couple of tools stamped GWR and they also have a quality look and feel.

Nostalgia - Jack Hargreaves - Out of Town, Old Country

With some spare time last week, did something I rarely do….searching aimless on YouTube rather than view my favourite channels. Up popped a Jack Hargreaves programme from the late 70s early 80’s and I felt instantly transported back to being a lad, loved his tv programmes, his fishing...

    Mystery Elliott Brothers Thingamabob

Anyone know what this was used for? Graces Guide provides info on Elliot Brothers being an early instrumentation maker eventually moving into electrical instruments. So, possibly an aid to calibration ? From a carpentry tool chest, wonder why would a carpenter squirrel it away wrapped in waxed...

    Mystery Brass Tool

Schoolboy error ref’ Stanley 5 1/2 Type 11 Cutter Size

Will seem like a schoolboy error for some on the forum…usual suspects, however, I’ve just realised the 5 1/2 cutter width was a 2.1/4” up until late 1930s ish. Can source a new replacement, also have a suitable Record cutter, however an original Stanley would be preferable, but probably like...

    Record Power

Wanting to share the excellent service I’ve again received from Record Power, maybe anyone weighing up different options when choosing kit to purchase, this will be useful. I’ve recently purchased my fourth Record Power machine, which had a small fault caused in transit (damaged plug, no big...
