Carbide inserts for lathe tools; do they vary in quality..?

Picked up some Sandvik carbide inserts on eBay for a relative bargain; shall see if they last any longer. Alas Cromwell don't do the inserts for the tooling at school but I might be tempted to get hold of one of their catalogues for bedtime / toilet reading!

Carbide inserts for lathe tools; do they vary in quality..?

I teach practical metalwork at a Scottish secondary school and I've gone over to using carbide insert tooling; it has certainly made things much easier! (And we don't have a grinder in the workshop so couldn't use HSS anyway.) We bought the tool itself from RDG Tools and have got to the end...

So I went looking for a Nippy vice on eBay...

You may find your expectation very wrong - it is actually a very 'clean' result!

So I went looking for a Nippy vice on eBay...

I'm sure most folk on here know what the class Nippy vice is; we've got a couple at the school at which I teach and they're old, worn but utterly dependable. Thought I'd see if there were any available on UK's eBay. I don't normally do politics but I was amused at what appeared first!

Bowl Sanding Kit from Santa - Which one ?

I've had the Hope sander for almost a couple of years and I'm happy with it; I've yet to find myself wanting to use an arbour on a drill as I've found it so effective - woodturning is a hobby for me so I appreciate that someone doing it for a living may well need things done in a more timely...

    Dust Masks

A sensible decision. I bought a 3M 6200 Series mask on eBay and when it arrived from China I started to have doubts about its authenticity... when I bought a 7500 Series (larger model) from Cromwell Tools I compared the two and it was undoubtedly a counterfeit. Having briefly had an Axminster...

    Wadkin submarine

Similar story here; the school I teach had a couple of old metal lathes taken away, one of which was an old Myford, and replaced with newer (well, used but new to us) lathes... if I'd known then what I know now I'd have sold it on behalf of the school and raised several hundred pounds. Always...

Removing Everbuild 502 (resin based) glue...

Ah, you learn something every day! I'll give the heat another go - boiling water this time, try and find a container they can soak in for a bit. Cheers!

Removing Everbuild 502 (resin based) glue...

Thanks for all the suggestions! Alas this isn't PVA glue - this one is resin based. Tried the hot air gun on it to no avail. I found some thinners, albeit xylene, and it didn't do owt. Ditto WD40, IPA and unicorn tears. I think I shall just resort to licking them clean over a period of...

Crown tools customer service. Second to none

Another vote for checking out Mark Sanger's videos on YouTube! I've got the Mini Revolution and subsequently bought the larger shaft and made myself a much larger, longer handle - just haven't had the time to really play with it! Bought them all from Mark and his prices are discounted; the...

Removing Everbuild 502 (resin based) glue...

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove dried and set Everbuild 502, a resin based wood adhesive, from the serations on the rails of my Bessey clamps..? I don't want to use anything abrasive as don't want to damage the serrations. Just wondering if there's anything that anyone...

    "mahogany"

That 'oily' feel you describe has just confirmed that it is indeed iroko that I have - cheers! (The school I teach at is fifty years old and the science department wangled a grant for new worktops in the four labs... we (the 'techie' teachers) had all the old worktops kept back rather than...

For those of us with MicroClene (Acrol Ltd) Air Filters...

I've discovered from discussions elsewhere it would seem the company is no longer trading; website down and I know that Biven Machinery have said for a few months that availability has meant that they've stopped taking orders. I bought a MicroClene only five months ago (one of the newer red...

Brendan Stemp video - natural edge bowl

Watched that the other day - I do find his videos very soporific and soothing; but not in a bad way! Me watching woodturning videos on YouTube has become a great source of mockery for 'Project Management'... :-/

    Video of Axminster AT1416VS

The AT1416 was my first lathe and I loved it. As others have mentioned it is quiet and the variable speed very handy to have, also the reverse. I bought it when it was £750 list price and Axminster had a 10% offer on. Replaced it with a Killinger KM1450SE at a time when we in the UK could...

    Axminster SK114 variant question

Having actually used it this weekend I'm also mightily impressed with the 'gripper' jaws that Axminster do... think I'll be selling the Patriot as I'd rather just have the one jaw system.

    Axminster SK114 variant question

I seem to have got away with not paying any extra over the T38RL that I'd actually ordered on 22nd of October... 8) This might be a controversial comment... but the quality of manufacture and fit of jaws onto the carriers is sublime; far better than it was on the Patriot when new a couple of...

    Axminster SK114 variant question

PM Me if you like and I'll happily provide invoice and order no's - happy for you to quote them when ordering. That's assuming what I have is what you want!

    Axminster SK114 variant question

Yes, it is listed as the SK114 T38R, part 504493 on the invoice. That 'reverse locking mechanism' that they've sent you a photo of would seem to be the reverse locking mechanism detailed in the PDF manual download on the Axminster website.
