Visiting UK in a couple weeks

I finally received office authorization for my planned trip to the UK. Unfortunately, it will not be all fun, as my colleague and I will spend two weeks in London at the Ministry of Work and Pensions for an exchange of best practices between their microsimulation model and ours. However, I...

    Record #10

Just acquired one of those a couple days ago. I was told they were quite rare, at least on this side of the pond. Does anyone know when they were produced, and are there any "types" associated with them (à la Stanley)? When I picked my plane there was among other things a 050, didn't know they...

    Pemuvar planes?

I "acquired" a Pemuvar P44 tonight. It looks like a clone of the Record 044, with a few differences. Depth stop is missing, and so are the rods, but nothing to keep it from becoming a user plane, and the price was right. Given that it was made in England I assume someone here should know about...

Requirements to operate a WW business

Probably posted at the wrong place, but this is where I hang... Here in Canada (or the US for that matter AFAIK), there's nothing to keep anyone from starting a woodworking business, other than zoning restrictions and a few administrative details (like getting registered with the tax...

    45 and 405 rods

Are they the same size (diameter)? I have a 044 that's missing the long rods. Last night I checked the 405 that I have "custody" of, and its rods fit the 044. Can't use them though, as the 405 is in brand new condition (even though it's 30 years old), and I must keep it that way. Do you know...

    Re-handling pigstickers

I've acquired three pigstickers today. Unfortunately, they came without handles: On one I read "I&H Sorby", next one is a "Isaac Greaves", and the last one seems to say something like "C. Pearson". They're all in good shape, and I think the price was right (about 22 pounds for the three)...

    Side rebate plane question

What is the minimum width of a dado that you can use either a #79, #98 or #99 with? Does this value increase substantially with the depth of the dado? I'm considering the purchase of the #98-99 set, depending on their capabilities... For those who own a set, how do you like them? TIA, DC

    So, Alf...

The 10,000 post mark is getting closer and closer, are you planning to celebrate this somehow? How about getting a new tool? Seems you could use a few    Maybe you deserve an entry in the Guinness Book of Records? DC

Infill plane construction - shaping the infill

My materials gathering is progressing on my Shepherd Spiers #7 kit. I have the dovetailed shell, and some rosewood to build the infill. I need to make decisions on what iron to use (with or without a cap iron), whether to include an adjuster, and choosing between open and closed tote. I am...

    Price of Honduras Rosewood?

Got myself a chunk of said wood (Dalbergia Stevensonii) for my Shepherd Spiers #7 infill plane project. Just wondering what's a fair price for that wood (first time I bought from that person). I'd like to hear your opinions before telling what I paid for it. If that makes a difference, my chunk...

    Clifton planes anyone?

The name doesn't come up very often around here... In my neck of the woods they're priced, and are considered to be, in the same league as LN. Opinions? DC

    Manners planes

Can anyone tell me something about them? I "inherited" a box of woodies last week, and one plane has "MANNERS" stamped on its end. Never seen that name before (then again I don't know much about woodies...). And I have no clue as to its purpose... Thnx, DC

    Black walnut suitable for infill?

I have a Shepherd Spiers No. 7 smoother kit that I need to find infill wood for it. I've looked around here, and the exotics that are usually recommended are priced out of this world, and very difficult to find in a suitable size. Now I have some nice black walnut that is plenty large enough (7...
