Dumpster Dive Find 1: Plywood Chair Back

Thanks for the kind words, it's most appreciated. :) We were sent a sample castor & insert from the very nice people at http://www.castors-online.co.uk/ , which fitted perfectly, so have just bought a full set. Can't wait to get it up and running.

Dumpster Dive Find 1: Plywood Chair Back

I'm bumping this one again in the hope of some useful advice on what to do about the plywood back. Whether the chair is to your taste or not, my wife has recovered the seat beautifully, and we have some specialist castors in the post which will fit it perfectly. This is all far preferable to...

Dumpster Dive Find 2: Oak Stool

Nice one. Can you or anyone else put an approximate age on it? The magnificent school building this originated from was built in 1808, and is gonna close down soon for some incomprehensible reason, so being able to retain at least one little thing from it gives this project unimaginable value...

Dumpster Dive Find 2: Oak Stool

Thanks James! :D On closer inspection I think you're right about it being Oak/Beech. It's gonna be very important to keep the character of the piece intact, so sanding it down is out of the question. Thanks for your suggestion, and I'd like to hear more, if there are any? The wife and I...

Two recent finds, maybe I posted them in the wrong forum?

You were supposed to click on the threads, my friend! They certainly don't look their best sitting in a bath with ice dripping off them... :D

Dumpster Dive Find 1: Plywood Chair Back

By the way, I still have a useful amount of Birchwood Tru-oil Gun Stock finish, that I'm intrigued to try on this plywood. I think it was Jimi that forced me to buy a bottle of it a few years ago. Worked lovely on my old Record plane handle a while back, amongst other things.

Dumpster Dive Find 2: Oak Stool

Part 2 of 2. I think it's Oak? Correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love for someone to tell me which era this stool is from. It's absolutely gorgeous and drying out nicely. Solid & sits square perfectly. Looks like some fire damage? One foot has a bit of a bevel for some reason. Mortice & tenons...

Dumpster Dive Find 1: Plywood Chair Back

Hi guys, long time no speak. Everyone still got the regulation 7 fingers and 1 thumb? Great. :D Part 1 of 2. Here are some photos of a quirky old school chair that I found recently. It is in amazing condition and it's a travesty that it's been lying in a dumping area for nearly a year. Well...

    Infill Plane

as someone who moved to Ayrshire last year, this is interesting to me. I was at an antiques fair in Ayr last week and there was a plane very similar to that one on sale for £275!!! the seller said it was made in Ayr, but I was so shocked by the price I didn't think to take note of the...

My First Egg Beater... it's all *your* fault, guys

is that the slope full of crazy people obsessively collecting dozens of each item? haha, no way! (honestly!) i'm quite happy to buy one nice old example of each type of tool, try and make it look nice, and still have plenty room in my workshop to hide from the wife. ;) anyway, work in progress...

it sounds to me like... it's a bit pointless prohibiting new signups from posting images. :S

My First Egg Beater... it's all *your* fault, guys

Went to an antiques fair in Ayr yesterday and came away with this lot. The guy was selling a load of stuff for his son, who restores old boats at the harbour in Irvine and apparently keeps finding these old tools in the process. A North Bros. "Yankee" No. 10 ratchet screwdriver - handle a bit...

A curious thing to find on a screwdriver...

I think when the '22' is given a good wire-brushing it'll eventually show up as 'SS'; and Scouse should come clean and show us the rest of his grandad's wartime memorabilia. ;)

A curious thing to find on a screwdriver...

it is almost certainly from around 4000BC. and if it's from the Samarra Toolmakers of Sheffield it'll be worth a bob or two on 'Cash in the Attic'. :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika#A ... cal_record

    Ear Defenders

Yep - no doubt our health & safety rules offshore are ridiculously over the top, but we have to replace our ear defenders once a year. There is a wee register with our names and dates of last issue and expiration dates. And also agree strongly about earplugs - some types are unusable...

Confession is good for the soul - admit your mistakes!

All excellent stuff, even though I barely understand half of it. We could maybe open this up to describing other people's mistakes too? :?: :P

    Wooden handrail profile

make it in two smaller pieces (which will fit your lathe) and then make a really nice job of joining them back together.

    driftwood

LOL... so you're suggesting he just goes and chops down a whole tree - probably belonging to someone else - and then makes it look like driftwood? you forgot to suggest a pickup truck or trailer to get it all home. ;)
