    Wedge angle?

I looked up the plans for Dean Jansa's marking gauge in Dec '06 issue of PW. Interestingly he doesn't specifically indicate the wedge angle, only linear dimensions are marked. The angle of the mortice for the wedge works out to be approximately 3.8 degrees. For the wedge, I calculate the...

    Handcutting Dovetails - A Question.

Are thinking of the one Kingshott shows in his dovetail video? It has two sets of pins ( 1:6 & 1:8 ) and cool looking brass knobs. He states that it was made by Richard Kell but I can't seem to find it anymore. I know I found it on the web like five years ago when I first saw the video. It...

    Galootish goodness

Thanks for the link Pete! I missed that episode when it aired back in October. I was looking for it since it seemed to be some of the inspiration for Alf's London Pattern handle adventure. Anybody notice that David hollow ground his Japanese chisels? I thought that was a no no from what I've...

hell for the next few weeks!!!!!!!!

How strange, Englishmen that don't like football. Almost as odd as an American (me) who does like it. Folks at my work think I am nut to get so excited about the World Cup. I think the Scottish just need to join a different Football Confederation if they want to qualify. I'd offer to let...

Infill component planes...designed & manufactured by Hol

This assumes you didn't over file the dovetails (DAMHIK) in the first place. Maybe with right punches I wouldn't have had to apply as much force to fill the gaps. On the other hand maybe I was just pineappled that I overfiled the dovetails in the first place and needed to vent :) Wendell

    Diamond paste sharpening ...

I've been using 12" x 3" polycarbonate pieces for diamond paste sharpening. It works well for the lower grits (45 & 15 micron) but I really want to try cast iron for the higher grits. Based on this my preference would be 12" x 3". I'd be willing to pay up to $50 a plate just because it's...

Infill component planes...designed & manufactured by Hol

Can you give more details on the punches you use? After reading about using punches for infill building, I tried to use a punch on my Shepherd thumb plane kit. I ended up with deep dimples that are going to take significant sanding/filing to remove. I suspect that either I don't have the...

    Yankee Spiral Adaptor

I don't know how much this helps but here is a US supplier that carries two different style adapters for Yankee screwdrivers. http://www.mcfeeleys.com/product.asp?ProductID=yh-2430 or http://www.mcfeeleys.com/product.asp?ProductID=amr-2130 They have them for the #130 (9/32), #131 (5/16)...

    Which Low angle block

I didn't weigh in on the previous thread. I have the LV LA block plane and the LN 60-1/2R rabbet/rebate block plane. I find the LN fits better in my hands because it is smaller and I have small hands to begin with. Quality wise you cannot go wrong with either one. My suggestion would be to...

    Woodworking Magazine Blog

Good call Alf! I just found the blog last week. I've been waiting for the lastest issue with the Roubo bench to come out and stumbled across the blog. Good stuff. Since most of the blog seems to be written by Chris Schwarz, it didn't surprise me that it was very hand tool oriented. Chris...

A Question about Ian's infill article

Ben, thanks for the confirmation that there aren't any hidden problems with putting the throat plate in before peining. Ian, The text on your website is displaying more consistantly now. I was having trouble when I switched between full screen and something less. Now it is working fine. The...

A Question about Ian's infill article

Great website Ian! The jointer plane build article is excellent. I have two of these kits waiting to be built (smoother and thumb plane). I had read the directions for the smoother and thought it was odd that the throat plate was installed after peining the shell. I couldn't see why you would...
