    i have a pair of these. if i understand what your describing correctly then they are meant to be like this. they can be adjusted parral using the little yellow bit on the two heads. i belive they are like this to allow for clamping awkward shapes.

    i have just looked at a decking job for a customer. they are keen on using rope for the handrail. A quick google search has sugested using 28mm rope. the rope will go through 4"x4" posts. My questions are 1 how easy is it to tie a tight knot in 28mm rope 2 how to finish the ends to stop them...
