    Simple beginner question.

Yes i've thought about half laps too, either way, i was more concerned about cutting the rebate and i know i'm far to useless to cut a decent mitre! ;)

    Simple beginner question.

Well I wasn't expecting that response in the time I went to get some kip. Thanks everyone, some great ideas suggested. The reason I wanted to make this frame is not to save a few £, otherwise I would have bought it online. I have some lovely old planks that had washed up on my local beach back...

    Simple beginner question.

I am going to try and make a simple wooden photo frame for a few of my recent photography projects, it will be a simple 4 sides joined at 90 degrees with dowel joints. Nice and simple. However, i require a 'lip' on all four sides of the frame for the glass to sit within, I do not have a bandsaw...

    wood boards - beginner help.

How are those lovely apparently seamless solid wooden boards made from planks of wood? Can these be made quite simply at home or do they require specialist equipment? dan

    Beginner requiring advice.

http://www.greatgreengoods.com/images/pinecabinet.jpg Something like this? I like the simplicity of the design and more importantly, the finish! is this the actual colour of the wood or is it stained? I like the 'rough and ready' look of it. What do you suggest? Edit: what do you think about...

    Beginner requiring advice.

OH ok, ok. This is good. i would be requiring 4x2" posts i suppose for such projects. I will have a look around. if a properly dried piece of softer pine was used, could i still get it to look something like that? How would you recommend finishing? Dan

    Beginner requiring advice.

http://www.mrbargain.co.uk/shopimages/p ... al/002.jpg I can see HOW to make this, but I am having difficulty in choosing the appropriate wood to do make something this style. This is apparently "reclaimed pine", how is it finished to look like this, and could i have a finish like the picture...

Ok, thanks for your advice. Do you know where i could source such old wood in a decent amount? and how i can differentiate spruce from pine? in what way is ages pine different from non-aged? Dan

    Beginner requiring advice.

that's great. it is surprising how much wood is these days. most of the time it is cheaper to buy the finished product than it is to DIY. I am thinking of making a nice 'rustic' style cabinet for an aquarium. Should be interesting. If you have any spare wood going, i would be more than happy to...

    Beginner requiring advice.

thanks for you replies, Carl, thats a very kind offer. :) I have plenty of old wood here to practise on but was thinking of making a small cabinet now using mortise and tenon joints. The reason i wanted to use reclaimed wood was because i really like the rustic and worn look of it, but...

    Beginner requiring advice.

Hi, I am a quite new when it comes to wood working so want some basic advice. I previously tried making some mortice and tenon joints in what i thought was pine but turned out to be spruce. My tools were sharp and my technique was correct but was not having much success because the wood seemed...

    'PINE' wood.

Was just curious. When buying "pine" furniture, i could actually be buying spruce. Interesting anyway. Thanks.

    'PINE' wood.

Here is a quick question, When people refer to 'pine' wood, do they strictly mean from the genus 'pine' or from the 'pine' family which also includes spruce, fir etc. Just curious. Dan

    Mortis and tenon joint.

Oh ok, I hadn't considered that. Thanks guys.

    Mortis and tenon joint.

Will redesign my cabinet in that case, I am set on using a mortise joint so will continue to practise. Does anyone know where i can source reasonably priced timber?
