    Flatting paint

You can certainly get flatting agents for gloss paint. I know of them for use in coach enamel on narrow boats. They are sometimes added to the top coat used on the roof to reduce the glare coming off the roof for the chap at the back steering (me). Go to anyone who mixes/sells car paint or try...

    Praise for Axminster

My Jet AFS 1000B air filter stopped working after 4 months. I called Axminster and they sent a new circuit board which I fitted but the fan still wouldn't operate. They arranged delivery which was a bit of a trial because TNT wouldn't take it without a box. I didn't have the box and it's bigger...

    Buying wood over the internet

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll stick with picking the boards myself. I've been going to Goodwillies at Waterlooville up to now and they've been very helpful although their hardwood range is limited. I'll certainly try Wests and English Woodlands as they are nearer anyway.

    Buying wood over the internet

I am thinking of buying from SL Harwoods. What is forum members' exerience of buying wood (not sheet material which I think must be more reliable) without having picked it off the rack. I've always done that up to now and left the knotty shakey bits for the next chap. If one buys over the...

    Makita ROS pad failure

Has any one else had the foam pad on a BO6030 fail. I've had the sander for a year or two and used it a fair bit bit I'm no pro so I'm disappointed the foam pad is coming apart so soon. The replacement seems to be about £40 and with a new sander at £127, that seems a bit steep.

    Valuing A Business

The usual way to value goodwill is on the basis of super profits. Super profits are those profits in excess of a reasonable return for effort and a reasonable return on capital employed. In other words, if you have 25,000 and could get 5%, that would be 1250. If you would earn 30,000 doing the...

    XCALIBUR 806 PROBLEM

I had a terrible problem with this and thought I was in real trouble. Even with everything jammed tight and an extension tube on the allen key I couldn't get it to budge. In the end I put the pin wrench on and then the finger plate and nut. That gave me something to jam the handle of the pin...

Souce of Formica HP laminate for Router Table

I looked at formica for the outfeed table of the table saw. Covers in Chichester quoted £110 for a 10 x 4 sheet but said they had a lower grade version at £30 for 10ft x 4ft. The only difference was that the cheaper version did not have the heat resistance. I had the cheaper type and it has been...

Cars at auction - any views?

I bought a 2001 Merc E240 last year for £8000 at Blackbush. It had 25000 miles on the clock. It has been great, probably the best car/bargain ever. I was "lucky", the car had a few minor dents and some of the plastic bits had got too near to the kirb, and the prvious owner had run the alloy...

Clarke's bench drill press CDP5DD - cheapest model

I have a very very old one of these. It is OK for general work and with sharp drills it manages well. It doesn't handle forstner bits above about 3/4 inch unless you take it very very slowly. There is no play in the chuck in spite of its age and the table adjusts easily and accurately. If I...

    Grain Fillers

Does anyone have experience/advice about filling grain prior to finishing using Pore-O-Pac system. I'm making a dining table and want a morror finish. I'm contemplating either the Pore-O-Pac or water based fillers from Behlen. Has anyone used them, which is best, any tips on technique? I'm doing...

    Melamine or Formica

I went through this process too. I was told (by Covers in Chichester) that they could get Formica but that it came in 10' x 4' sheets and was £130 + VAT plus delivery of £10. They also did a cheaper version, same size sheet but £39 (incl VAT). The main difference was that real Formica was heat...

    Oak Choice

I am planning to build and oak dining table. I went to my wood supplier (for something else) and looked through the oak stock. They have European (Croatian) and American White varieties. The european is 50% dearer. What views do members have on the relative merits of the two. I asked what the...
