    Marking gauge recommendations

I have notched the ends of my Combination square, enough to accept the lead of a pencil. Æ

    Cannels - anybody know why?

Chefs use a Cannel Knife in order to turn slices of cucumber into simulated gear wheels (before doing the slicing, of course). This removes the bitterness of the skin. Some of their knives are used by pulling, and some sideways like a peeler. Æ

    Best British Hand Drill?

Regarding the S.T.S Drill, I had some difficulty unscrewing the inline handle to try it in the Pistol-grip attitude, until I found that the thread is a Left Hand Thread ! In the altered position the drill is very compact, and a pleasure to use. Alvan Æ

    Unknown tools - any ideas?

The second item is a Padsaw Handle. The hook engages with a tooth and the notch pushes the back of the (broken hacksaw) blade. I had a similar item with cast iron frame/handle.

Easy, cheap & useful mod to Combination Gauge.

Cut or file a notch at both ends of the rule, to take a pencil point. or even a ball point pen tip. You then have a free panel or marking gauge. This is so easy to register in the groove of the rule. Æ
