setting up a no.5 as virtual scrub

If you are dimensioning wood with hand tools (as opposed to power jointer + thicknesser), then there are times when you want to remove thick chips instead of paper thin shavings. If you put a camber on the edge of the blade of a #5, and back up the frog to open the mouth, then this plane...

    Just a little chuffed!

I just noticed on the LN website that they are (finally!) offering their bevel-edged chisels in O1! Three cheers! -Andy

Here in the states, that stuff is usually wetter than a pig in a pond!

Ashley Iles Mk.2 Bevel Edged Chisel Passaround

Hi Joel, I'll try out the Mk II in beech when you get them in stock, well, probably Jan or Feb before I'll have the $ to do so. I just like the beech. -Andy

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

Not contradictory at all! After all, there is more than one user/customer of this plane. As you said, everybody has their own preference. I have yet to hear of LN turning someone down when they asked for the holes for the knob to be tapped.

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

Christian, As far as I can see, no one but you is concerned here about the original Stanley #9. The topic concerns the LN #9, and whether or not it is now sold with the hotdog (vs. front knob). I can even imagine advising anyone to go out and get an original #9, since their value to collectors...

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

I suspect that many users wanted the hotdog, but that the total cost of the plane was too high when the hotdog was a $50 add-on. By including the hotdog, the cost of manufacturing was decreased by not tapping the two holes (both sides) and by eliminating the front knob altogether. Many users...

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

Christian, I guess we have a fundamentally different take on this plane. I consider the LN to be the superior, and now authoritative version for users. I emphasize: for users. Similarly, LN has made the #62 into a user plane. So while I find it to be interesting information that Leonard...

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

I'm not sure which site you are viewing. On the LN site, you can see that the knob on the side of the front of the plane is now gone. The hotdog, which used to be optional, is now included as standard. If an online store is depicting the #9 with the front knob, either they have not updated...

    LN No9...hot dog handle?

I recommend the same. If they are selling off old stock, you'll get the front side knob but not the hotdog; if you get a newer one, you'll get the hotdog with no knob (also, no tapped hole for a knob). On another forum there is a fellow who just sent his new #9 back for LN to tap a hole for a...

    Which LN bevel edge chisels?

Hi David, I know this is drifting somewhat off-topic, but by "locally," do you mean locally in Maine (_New_ England) or locally in your "neck of the woods"? Because it is indeed called "ironwood" here in Vermont (as well as Maine). Interestingly, hornbeam is also called "ironwood" here, and...
