I doesn't look like any kind of rosewood in those photos. I've no idea what it is though but it doesn't look a premium timber and mostly appears to be sapwood.

Thank you both.

We bought a dining table and chairs set made from this wood, from a charity shop ( a label on the chairs says it was made in India) and I've seen a number of items on the internet in the same wood, all described as Indian Rosewood (the picture I posted is from eBay). But while searching the internet to try to identify the wood I found other images of IR that are quite unlike this (which ties in with your thoughts Jones) hence my confusion and the reason for my post.

The items for sale on the internet all include the word Sheesham, which ties in with your reply Phil.

So thanks again.

This may be of interest to some .I bought this Rosewood table in Bombay India back in 1978 during my time in the Merchant Navy. I got it in one of the many local markets but for the life of me i cannot remember the name of the market. It is 5 feet long and 28" wide ,the top is made from a single board 1" thick ,hand carved around the edge and inlaid with brass and copper, the legs are also inlaid , rather crudely made but in my eyes at least it is a lovely table , over the years the colour has faded slightly even though it has almost always been covered by a table cloth and kept on display out of direct sunlight .

We have a large coffee table and side table made to the same design, although the wood is darker. We bought ours from John Lewis years ago when this type of Indian furniture was popular.

I should have done the same mikej ,it would have saved me hiring a car when we docked in Bristol:LOL:. Though it was it was an experience seeing these type of pieces being made in the workshops scattered around the fringes of the market and the fragrance in the air is something once smelled is something one is unlikely to forget, a mixture of wood sweat and :poop:
