Wood ID?

Hi Guys and gals,

Need to source some timber to match sone existing skirting boards, anybody help me out?

My guess is pitch pine, but being a youngun, have never worked with or physically handled any myself.

+ 1 for Pitch Pine. Southern yellow pine would be a goodish match.

douglas fir/columbian pine might give you a match as well depends how much you need

+ another one for pitch pine. If you want a good match to it, then it's worth looking for reclaimed PP; there used to be at least a couple of suppliers in Lancashire, but they may have exhausted the supply there now. Got some in a job lot of reclaim recently, but it's not for sale!!
There is supposed to be some new PP from plantation forestry available, but don't know who might stock it.
It's an "interesting" wood to work with; quite hard, sometimes brittle and resinous, but smells loverly

Douglas fir?......most of the pitch pine I've ever used (not much) has been much tighter grained than those pieces.

very unusual skirting, and quite simple compared to some ive been brought.. 3 rebates and a stepped roundover.

Phil, it didnt smell like douglas fir when we cut it, and the grain is very sappy (for want of a better word)

Definitely pitch pine then, used to use it quite a lot and there's so much resin in it that we used to have "snowball" fights with the sawdust
