Wood for side gate?

I have to make a side gate. Not sure of the design yet but wondering which wood to use. I want it to be quite a well finished job rather than a "gate" sort of gate - if you see what I mean.

I'm thinking Cedar?

How are you going to finish it? If you're not painting it then Meranti would be a good choice as it stands up well to external conditions and looks nice! It's also cheaper than Cedar
