In the BS yesterday getting some cash together for our holiday and saw a pamphlet on the shelf Travel Insurance.

Hmm, some benefits listed,
Upto age 80 ............Ah
Single Trip cover upto 6 months...............Oh.
Premiums upto £150 can be saved.......................Great
So I took the leaflet home and telephoned the 0845 number

Told the lady I was 68 and going to Oz. for 6 months, I'll look up the terms she said.

Sorry we dont insure anyone over 44 years of age for that cover.

Oh I said, you like to make sure you dont have any claims then.

Yes Roger, that sums it up.

In fact I dont think you will find a travel policy (healthwise) that hasn't got itself covered. They usually omit treatment if previously treated or have excesses or increased premiums. But 44 is coming it a bit.

I 1871 Mark Twain wrote an essay entitled The Dangers of Lying in Bed in which he talked about those insurance tickets one could buy at the train station. He gave some statistics showing that people are more likely to die in their beds than on a train. He said: "my advice to all people is, don't stay at home any more than you can help; but when you have got to stay at home a while, buy a package of those insurance tickets and sit up nights. You cannot be too cautious."

I expect his point is still valid. ;)
