I suspect the others are correct in suggesting bamboo, and here is a link to a supplier of bamboo panel products for more information.

The end grain in your image is rather reminiscent of palm wood, although the face grain is very different. Slainte.

Yes, definitely bamboo. Try working or sanding it - it's a nightmare. I made a kitchen table top out of left over flooring - it was great, but I wished it in hell while making it.
