what wood is this ??

Hi I was given two bits of wood which I made two pens out off

can anyone tell me what wood they are :?: the bottom one had yellow paint on the end if that helps, sorry picture is not good :roll: not into picture taking only have an old Kodax camera :| . Hope you can help please the person who gave them to me has no idea :?
