Hi,
Does anyone know how this sort of "axe" is called and what is (was?) used for. Looks like an axe that has lost its other half.

Not in a pretty state, as you may see; and the lettering (manufacturer's name?) can't even be fully read, so I can't even use that for searching.

Thanks for any tip.

G.

Side Axe - for trimming sides of timber.

For searching purposes, in North America they call this style of axe,
or at least axes used for the same purpose, "Broad Axe" or "Hewing Axe".

( A "broad axe", is not simply an axe-that-is-broad, in the same way that a
"black board" is not simply a board-that-is-black)

Thank you very much

undergroundhunter: "I would say its probably its French" - is that the style or the remaining inscription?

The style, the forged socket is a big clue, English axes have eyes unless they are really really old.

Thank you very much indeed.
I will now go after that half-hidden inscription...

Probably French. If you go into French Ebay (ebay.fr) and type doloire into the subject box you will see many similar axes. A doloire is a side axe. An excellent book on French axes is 'Les Haches' by Daniel Boucard.
