Hi I am knew to all this and I need some advice. I would like to cut a map of an island out off wood and then varnish it and hang it on my wall I would like to make my cutting our of a piece off wood the same size as an a4 page. Can anyone tell me what tool I need to use how much it might cost, also what type of wood should I use. I want it to look nice varnished but I would like to keep costs down. Also would I need much training off any sort to use the piece off equipment that I would be using to make my cutting off an island?

Ooh the fret saw owners will love this one
EDIT - that should have read "Ooh the SCROLL saw owners will love this one"

If you want to save money, you could use a good old hand powered fret or coping saw (but I wouldn't like to)

See my edit, scroll saw uses electricary

Type of wood is personal I guess, but after some/much practice, you could try two contrasting woods, perhaps a thin outline in something dark ?

As with anything, practice :)

If you're looking to just do this one task, you may be better asking if any of the skilled saw users on here would be interested in doing it for you as the saw will cost, practice will cost time and money in blades & wood and you may not feel confident to do something like this for a while

If you do practice though and get the bug, I've seen some fantastic looking stuff on here

It's not a one off I want. I have a business idea. But I really need to find out how to use the saw and I have no idea where I can learn how to use one, That's my main problem

is it a repeat of the exact same thing? if so, i think that you want to be looking at cnc or laser cutting.

Ok, if your willing to cross the water, 2 mins on a ubiquitous search engine shows a few courses available in the UK, but nothing yet in NI, sorry

No idea. Think it is like everything- pretty simple when you know how! The first one will probably be expensive, but all of the programming work is then done, so the next ones will be just the cutting time. Whether you want to look at investing in a cutter, learning the programming etc, or just subcontracting it out and doing the finishing (sanding, varnishing etc) yourself is another matter.

without wanting to rain on your parade, there is a fair bit of work getting roughly sawn timber to the state where you put it through the laser cutter or cnc machine. Even if you buy the timber planed, it still needs cutting to size and it doesnt sound like you are set up to do so.

I think a bit more detail may help

What do you need to learn ? as Marcros said, you need to prepare the wood first so do you need to learn that or is it just the cutting out ?

What sort of budget ? cnc/laser are proper boys toys and command a price to reflect

How many do you want to cut out per hour/day/week ?

I want to cut out an island and varnish it and hang it on a wall. I would like to cut quit a lot maybe up to 50 pieces per week. But if my idea takes off I could be needing to cut more

Well then, CNC/laser, scroll saw or even template and router - try with router or scroll saw first as these are cheaper

Courses would so much depend on you - timing, cost and travel will matter as much as the subject I expect

I would still suggest practice to start with though - what do you need to know once you decided what machine to use ?

Have you ever done anything like this before ?

Yes I done it in school many years ago like 22 years ago I actually cut the piece out that I am wanting to cut again but it was many years ago as I said so I guess I am a total beginner again. I can't even remember the piece off equipment I used to cut the piece. I'm guessing the equipment I used back then is out dated now
