what is it for?

There seems to be some wear around the central portion and there's a little blackening at the tips.

Any ideas?

I was going to put on eBay as "A Wooden Thingy" ... but thought I'd see if I could find out.

Looks quite old.

Done the usual with Google images but no luck.

I have no idea. Most of the obvious ideas would require a hard(ish) wood, and your object looks a lot like pine.

That would be my guess as well. Smooth rounded off ends so It doesn't snagg the net on the way through/
