I have a home made wet wheel. Runs at about 50-60 rpm. 8 or 9 inch smooth stone, approx 2 inches across.

The tool rest is at the top, with the chisel pointing away from me.

Should be obvious, but.... which way should the wheel turn?

That is how I've got it set. I find it kicks up a small burr on the flat side of the chisel which then needs removing with a flat stone, but then I find I've lost any edge. Perhaps it's just my bad technique.

Sounds like you have pushed the burr to the other side not removed it, you need to work it back and forth to get rid of it, probably on a finer grit.

Thanks Pete. I think I just need more practise. I daren't ask in the hand tools section! Especially not this close to an election
