Hello forum, I'm making a mirror from a board of waney edge chestnut and while the piece looks well one side is slightly rotten- its foamy - and at present certain areas would break off easily if picked at or hit off something sharp, I don't want to dump it, is there any way of sealing/treating it to toughen it up ?. Cheers, Paul

You could try a few liberal coats of celulose sanding sealer, it works well on spalted timber that if going a bit soft. Just brush on and let it soak in, repeat every 10mins until it will take no more.

Superglue would also do the trick depending on how bad/large the affected area, just flood it with the glue and let it set.

Can resist any subsequent finsh though so might be worth trying a sample first, also keep the windows open because it really stings your eyes while it is curing if you use any quantity !

Cheers, Paul. :D
