Local supplier seems to have stopped doing it - where can I get dry 3" wany edge beech i.e. wide boards?

You could try MAC timbers - http://www.mactimbers.mfbiz.com or 01832 205 231. It's listed as one of the timbers they normally have and likely to be slabbed through and through if the stacks in their yard are anything to go by. Not your normal faceless sort of company either!

Cheers ta Andy. Looks good. It looks like I'm going to have to travel about a bit anyway, which should be interesting. There's other stuff I want too. Old-fashioned yards (untidy stacks of local cut timber) seem to be disappearing fast

Jacob, I have had some dealings with these folk. Firstly to remove a dangerous branch, but about six months ago with a mate who was buying Ash. They have a loft area with some long felled hardwood. This was mainly Ask, Sycamore and Elm. I could indentify the Elm as the mark of the beetle was still on the waney edge. Think how long that has been drying. The timber in the loft was covered in dust etc. but some quite big sizes and decent widths. It mat be worth giving them a call, if not for Beech then for future reference.

You might investigate Nidd Valley Sawmills, Dacre Banks, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, HG3 4EA. 01423 780 220-- no website to peruse-- too traditional for all that flimmy-flammy, poncey, blinged up, all mouth and no trousers nonsense. Frank Hird who owns the business has been enormously helpful to both myself and the students I teach. He likes to start early-- phone at about 6:30 or 7 am if you want to catch him in the office.

It's old fashioned, they mill their wood on a vertical band mill, employ a saw doctor, etc, and air dries the boards produced uncovered in the yard. Traditional as you can get, with most of his wood going to the upholstered furniture trade, but very accommodating in all the dealings I've had with him.

If you go there for anything do please mention my name and the connection at Leeds College of Art-- it's useful to be able to make business links. Slainte.

Brilliant! Thanks for all these leads. The beech is for some 'saddler's clamps' which a mate wants me to make for his leatherwork class. His is 3" beech sawn straight with a bend at on end - screwing them together makes the shape. I thought they would be steamed or laminated but apparently not. To saw out the walking stick shape needs a wide board to avoid waste, though 8" SE would do with the bends going one way at one end then the other at t'other.

I'm also looking for big boards of other local stuff, for project X.
