Hi folks, I have a w.gilpin bevelled edged chisel .It is 12" long and is quite fine.Would this have a specific use or is it just extra long. Unfortunately it has the wrong handle on it from a modern era. Anyone know what type/shape the handle should be and what timber it would be made fromCheers bw.

Sounds like a paring chisel, though a photo would help.

This longish thread covered some specialist uses

As for the handle, it's user preference that matters, but in my experience you'll mostly see the common boxwood "carver's pattern" handle on a paring chisel, or else the London pattern octagonal handle.

Yeah - there were some conventions, but many "proper" hardware stores back in the day had a stock of blades and a stock of handles.

You simply picked the combination you wanted, and they went out back and fitted 'em together.
