Hi all,

My Dad got given these 3 nice M&W tools in a natty wooden box but we can't work out what they're actually used for, or the names of them?!

I'd guess at them being 50+ years old as my dad was given them when he was a lot younger. They have hollow handles which makes me think they may have been for working leather, and they're quite lightweight? The top tool that looks like a chisel has a blunt end on it, the tool in the middle is curved in a spoon-like manor, and the bottom tool is a triangular shape.

Here's some pics, and any info is gladly appreciated.

Cheers

Wow, answered in 4 mins flat - you're a star Mick!

Thanks very much, my dad will be very pleased to now know what they are.

Cheers.

eBay "sold listings" is the best way to find out.

M&W scrapers seem to go for about a fiver each plus probably a premium for them being boxed.
Maybe £20-£25?

I have the same set, which were my grandfathers. I'm just wondering what they are worth? :?

The best way to answer this question is to search on eBay for similar sold lots. A similar set sold here for £14.05. They are not especially rare or sought after.

Thanks, I think I'll probably keep them. I was oblivious to what they were for, and if they was worth anything. I'll just keep them in my tool box forever. Lol

These are still used.
I guess no longer made but many engineering firms will have sets still in use.

I could take you to to a power station on the Kent coast right now where these will be used in the next few weeks to clean bearing houses for new fit bearing replacement.

If you get into plane making or refurbishment you may well find them useful. I have used mine (not as nice as your set) several times to tidy up a steel plane mouths.

According to a 1959 M&W catalogue, these are tube handled "Tool Makers' Scrapers",
set no 91X. The small size is what distinguishes them from bearing scrapers.

The list price was 13/6

You were robbed BB!

My 1935 catalogue says they're only six bob! :)
