I got the new Versa chuck 3 for Christmas so today I started to put it through its passes with a 10" x 3" bit of Checker wood so I started by seeing how accurate it is by first turning the outside on my toolmex supper precision chuck which is very accurate up to the top rim then I turned it round and mounted it on the versa chuck to finish the top of the rim and it was spot on newt I will try a 22" x 3" bowl

All of the parts are well engineered and fit perfectly and the jaw carriers fit very well on the Axminster jaws all in all I am well pleased so far and would recommend it please note the bowl was just to test the chuck and the wood has no finish on it

Sorely tempted to go for one of those bodies to fit my spare ISO backplate.

Just waiting to see if/how the new Axi developes but the price difference is certainly a big factor.

I gathered it would, but in any case there is enough spare material on the spare I have to allow a re-skim of the locating spigot to match them up if necessary.

I have been using this chuck for over a year now and find it truly lives up to its name!

Have updated the jaws with the help of Peter Hemsley and am working my way, slowly, to get the full compliment of accessory jaws etc.

Sincerely hope that anyone getting one of these chucks finds the same pleasure!!

Regards Peter.

Hi A friend who gets the woodturning mag loan me nov issue and the versachuck ad is in there. Well If you are in the market for a chuck this is the one to get it ticks 90% of the boxes. I am considering importing one in the next few weeks if the budget can cope. Regards Roger Courtney

Woody you are a lucky chap

That's good to know.
I have the previous one and when I reverse a piece, I find it isn't 'true'. I have just assumed it was either my incompetence, or the norm for everyone. Sounds as if that may not be the case. I wonder if I should check the chuck on another lathe, (anyone nearish to the West Midblands got a lathe with a 1 1/4" 8tpi lathe willing to let me come and try it?), or if maybe my Nova DVR runs out of true - Any suggestions to check that?
Cheers and nice bowl, Woody, (and lucky you getting out there so quickly after Christmas - I'm still fighting, sorry, I mean chatting with all the family!!)

Have you tried undoing and turning your back plate or loosen the back plate and tighten up the jaws and do the kiss test then tighten it up

Thanks, Woody. I'll give it a go.

I just received a new Versachuck3. It sure appears well made and heavy. I was a little surprised to find that the jaws can scroll out to the point where they fall out of the chuck body. All my experience has been with Supernova and Sorby Patriot chucks which have stops.

Is this standard behavior for this chuck?

Thanks

Yes, it is normal.

It is a result of the feature that allows you to swap the jaws without removing them from the jaw carriers.

Jon

The Jaw carrier freedom to come right out is not unusual in various other brands either, they rely on the operator taking that little bit of extra care in use to check that carrier engagement is in a safe region.
This is no different to any standard engineering chuck fitted to a Metal Turning lathe where the operator would expect to be able to change jaws from external to internal clamping configuration.

One thing you need to note if you are not used to an open scroll chuck is the carrier numbering, and to re-insert them in the correct sequence to obtain correct alignment.

Chas raises a good point about getting them back in the right order.

The new Axminster jaw carriers have nicely visible numbers but in case you can't find them then there is an easy and fool proof way....

If you arrange them teeth side up and sort them in order of the distance of the first tooth from the corner that goes to the centre and then insert them into the chuck in this order, catching each one with the tip of the outside of the scroll as it gets to the next slot as you turn the key, they will naturally be correct.

Hope this helps
Jon
