veneered oak honours board?

have been asked to make one up, and a fellow forumite donated a spare piece of venered board.

however, thinking about it are there any rules about the finish in relation to the signwriters task? should I just buff to a fine polish overall and ignore the issue of subsequent 'painting'?

Having done a few in the past most now seem to just stick vinyl letters on them. The ones I have done have been finished with a water based lacquer and have been both painted and stuck on.

unfortunately I have no idea who they are going to use for that, and then again the actual board won't be updated often either - maybe every 20 years on average!

Maybe a solid piece of oak would be better ?
