Would pieces of 3/4" wardrobe rail be good enough to support timber or would 3/4" dowel be better? I can get 4m for £10. I'm sure dowel would be more expensive than that.

There would be 4 supports over an 8ft span with a shelf on top.

Hi Dudester,

If you are building a timber rack, I would suggest going to an electrical wholesalers to buy some heavy-wall, galvanised conduit to use as a support for carrying weight. It's pretty stout, and in short lengths, it should hold a fair amount of timber.

I used some of this to make the rungs of a ladder (Softwood sides) some years ago. I since replaced it with a 'real' ladder, but it never let me down, and I've never been a lightweight.
