Hi

Picked up the unusual saw shown in the photographs attached.

Any information about it's likely age, original use and how one might go about sharpening it would be really appreciated.

Never tried sharpening a saw before.

Thanks

Ewan

If you have any green wood or logs - even of a modest size, and you don't want to use a chainsaw, these are the dogs doodabs - I used one to cut slices off a log for a garden 'path', otherwise it would look very nice on the wall.

Tara a bit,

Thanks

Just taken down some large branches in the back garden with my pole saw so have something to try it out on

With the teeth at the front which are slightly different shape need sharpening differently?

Lee Valley used to sell them here a number of years ago, a buddy has one, but they didn't have the handles. I would have to believe they are still made by somebody somewhere. The teeth at the tip are to make it easier to start the cut as it isn't as aggressive as the rest of the crosscut teeth.

Thomas Flinn still make / sell them. But this looks in great shape for an old one, should work well. They beat a bow saw any day IMHO. Two man saws are even better if you have an assistant.

It's surprising how much work you could get done with those saws and without needing earmuffs etc. Mind you, I was a bit younger forty years ago :?
