I was out shopping this weekend and got myself a new old saw, it might be a UK made saw but I´m not sure, on the blade it says "Powell", faint but still. Anyone that can tell me more about thisone ? Price was 65 SEK , aprox 6 £

Hello Johan, and welcome to the UKWorkshop forum!

Your saw is certainly of UK manufacture, and is probably quite an old one. The price is very similar to what you'd pay in the UK, perhaps a bit less (I'm judjing by prices on Ebay, for which a saw like this would be about £5 - £15, roughly). The appearance of the saw is definitely 19th century, and the shape of the handle suggests earlier 19th century. There's a useful guide to dating saws here - http://www.backsaw.net/timeline/ - and using the information on this suggests that since the saw has a medallion screw, it is later than 1830. You saw that the word 'Powell' is on the blade; if this is stamped in rather than etched, the saw is almost certainly pre-1850.

In the book, 'Handsaw Makers of Britain' by Schaffer and McConnell, there are several Powells listed as sawmakers. There are several in London between 1736 and 1782, but as the saw has a medallion screw, it isn't by them. There are also several in Birmingham, dates between 1818 and 1835, which fits with other information.

I think your saw was made in Birmingham between 1830 and 1835, approximately.

Edit to add - I typed the above just as Stewie was posting - his link fits neatly with the above.

Good to see saws of such vintage being put to good use.

What is the function of the little nib on the spine at the foot of the saw plate?

It's been discussed several times, on very specialised tool forums.

No one knows. Seriously.

Baa, that is the typical answer from the ones, who don't know the answer.
we, who know, are not allowed to talk about it, though...

Cheers
