After seeing Mark Baker demonstrate making one of these at our club spurred me into having a go. It has been on the tuit list for ages.

Made from mahogany, I was not to happy when the finish went on as it really showed the end grain darker on the inside. The wings are about 1/8" thick to give a lightness to them.

I also changed a couple of my scrapers to negative rake which I found easier to get a good final finish prier to sanding.

Even though you know about the grain showing darker C & C welcome

I think the darker end grain really gives something to the piece Dalboy, it's made it instantly 'vintage'!

Great form, I found mahogany really difficult to turn - maybe it was too dry, but it seemed quite suicidal and wanted to move/explode/run away every time I put an edge near it!

Really nice!

:D

Well done that man, =D> Mahogany and Idigbo just to name two when dry are very brittle and dusty to turn, end grain tends to tear out rather than cut even when your tools are ultra sharp so leaving tiny little holes that are best sanded out. I start with either 60 or 80 grit and work my way up to at least 600 and sometimes even up to 1200 on dry and brittle blanks.

A bit of a wing and a prayer there Derek, pieces like that are good for the ego when completed but I find I have a few nervous moments and the odd pause for thought to regain some confidence every time I approach something like that with a tool.
Definitely not time for the distraction of a visitor knocking on the workshop window.
