Looks like they were not being used as spindle gouges, being used as Roughing gouges on square stock or possibly encountered endgrain on bowl blanks.

That and the fact that the design with such a small cross section tang on such a broad cutting area gouge is very reliant on good hardening and tempering, if the tangs are too brittle then they will easily snap if mis-used or just heavily loaded.

Poor design by modern standards, assume as no mention of injuries that none occurred, a lucky escape twice over.

Hi

Where was the tool rest in relation to the work when this happened - it should have been within 1 - 10mm. The larger the gap the more stress the tool will suffer in this area.

Regards Mick

If they break it will always be at the weakest point, If one of them's poor qualiy the other one probably will be too. I've just googled the brand name and found no reference to it at all so I wonder if they are something short of top quality. Money spent on decent tools (including decent second-hand tools) is rarely wasted.

The tools look like the unbranded ones with just HSS stamped on them. They are not the best quality high speed steel and they are many versions of them about.

That said to break like that they must have been used wrongly with too much overhang, wrong angle of presentation and possibly on cross grain timber.
