Hi everyone,
I've been web browsing - I do more browsing than turning !! - and I found this useful looking site

http://bobhamswwing.com/index_of_articles.htm

with several articles, but the one that caught my attention mainly is on turning a bowl from rings cut from planks, so there's hardly any waste. It's not a new idea but there's plenty of detail if anyone is interested.

Also I found this site

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNSmMLNc ... -hot-vrecs

which shows a very neat idea for a bowl. This one is new to me (I'm to expert though, far from it). The end result looks really unusual.

Finally, and nothing whatsoever to do with crafts, you must see this video of the Ross sisters. Ignore the singing and wait for the action - you won't believe it.

Actually this brings to mind a question. A tried to turn a braclet from a piece of a plank I cut off the peice, mounted it to a glue block but had a great deal of trouble turning it down. Would this have been because the direction of the grian was wrong?

I turned a different braclet from the same wood but before doing so I made a plank by cutting and gluing strips from the wood and turning them on the side.

Any ideas why the first method did not work?

John,

If you were turning end grain it would be hard; alternatively the wood could be oak or similar, that it hard.
