I've got a Snap On torque wrench that's given many years of good service, but now there's a problem, it no longer seems to "slip", no matter how low the torque setting. Is it repairable/serviceable or should I start looking for a replacement?

Thanks

What about Snap On's much vaunted "warranty for life" ?

Hi

Sounds like the pawl mechanism has stuck / become dislodged, (see itemised parts below).

Does the ratchet head move, (as it would when 'breaking' to indicate achieved torque), when the torque adjustment is completely backed off?

First try would be to inject some WD40 or similar to see if that frees off the pawl mechanism.

Hi

It's always been selective, Q wrenches were never fully covered in my recollection.

Hello Mick,

you are Santa The Engineer! I followed your recommendation and it's back in business!

In fairness to Snap On it does say on the wrench "lubricate regulalrly", which of course I've cheerfully ignored for the past ten years.

Hi

That's good news - I have exactly the same model wrench and it has served me faultlessly :)

I bought a s/h/ Britool socket ratchet - having taken it fully apart (very easy), cleaned out all the old grease (and worse...) and reassembled with fresh grease, it's superb, and good for another decade or two.

When I was on the spanners I used to grease all my ratchets and torque wrenches once a month, only ever needed new guts in one and that was my own fault for pushing my luck.
