Having been dropped one too many time my old faithful torch has come to the end of its long life.

So, a quick gander round the Google for a replacement. Ye gods! 300 quid for a small torch!

I see technology has moved on. Now we have 1000 lumen LED “bulbs” and 3.7v 3400mAh rechargeable Li-ion batteries good for 9 hours continuous use.

Well no point in just buying a pig-in-a-poke so any torch expert here? I'm not interested in these vastly expensive offerings, something that’ll do a reasonable job (mainly for seeing what I'm buying at car-boots these dark mornings) at a reasonable price.

Thanks.

I have a small Fenix LD20 that cost about £30 or so a few years ago - really good and can be fixed to bikes etc.
I also bought a LED modification kit for my old Maglite and absolutely transformed that!

I've always been happy with my led lenser torches. Adjustable beam, didn't break the piggy bank ;)

+1 for LED Lenser. I have a variety of the 'P' series, and have been very happy with them..

I have a bit of a torch fetish! Fenix TK41 is a bit of a dream, however I don't think it's what you need.

LED Lensers are good. I also still like my Maglites and I have an LED 2AA Which is excellent and costs around £15 (I think)

However the torch that I would never part with out of all of them is my Petzl head torch Tikka 2 other options are about.

Costs about £30 and whilst it's not got a massive beam of light to light up a dog on the other side of a football field it does allow hands free illumination and it provides a good even light. You can dim it as well to avoid too much glare. It might be ideal if you want to have both hands free to "look" at things.

What sort/size do you want?

I'm another for LED Lenser but if you want a 2D maglight I'll post one to you.

I've gor a Lenser L7 (Toolbank had an offer coupla' years back). It's like
the P series, but much cheaper since the body is polycarbonate plastic, not metal.

I like it, but since we're talking high tech here, don't take 2 YO advice!

I have always like the maglights but not used the led version.

+1 for the lenser p7.

Paid £40 at maplins.

With a proper set of batteries and on highest beam strength 200lumens you will blind anyone in close proximity but you turn that down a bit with one click , the adjustable beam is great too.

I have one of these

I don't remember how much I paid, but it was under a tenner. I have found it very reliable(I generally use it as a bike lamp).
My wife has a Fenix, it was somewhere under £40. Also works very well, and has a mode in which it flashes SOS.

Just noticed some reviews on Amazon moaning about the handlebar mount for the first one - mine didn't come with a mount, and I bought a velcro based mount which works well.

I have a Fenix LD41 and it's excellent. The rectangular body enables the torch to be clamped in a portable vice for when I need some extra light.

Having re-read the OP, I don't think some of the mega (COOL!) bright items in this
thread would be a good idea.

Unless you want to become known as the guy who turns up to
carboots with the floodlight!

(seriously - even my L7 is overkill for most purposes,
let alone the awesome Fenix torches mentioned)

I very much appreciated all the posts and learnt quite a bit.

BUT, I must agree, some would be a little conspicuous at a car-boot before dawn! :)
